SAN ANTONIO – Fresh off a new ranking, No. 37 UTSA earned a 4-3 win over Gonzaga on Wednesday afternoon at the UTSA Tennis Center, marking the team's tenth win in a row.
The Roadrunners (1 2-4) fell behind early, dropping two of the three doubles matches, before winning four of six singles matches on their way to an important victory. The Bulldogs (5-6) claimed the opening point thanks to solid doubles performances, but they couldn't maintain as UTSA rallied to pull ahead in singles action.
In doubles play, UTSA got its lone win from Sebastian Rodriguez and Alan Magadan, as the 16th-ranked pair played together for the first time in a month. Rodriguez and Magadan took down a fellow top-75 doubles pair, as they defeated ##64 Sasha Trkulja/Matthew Hollingworth.
Magadan tied things up quickly in singles action as the junior from McAllen, Texas took his match in two. Sets, winning 6-1, 6-3. Danijal Muminovic then put the Roadrunners in front, also winning his singles match in two sets, 6-0, 6-4.
Gonzaga struck back as Arthus Bassetiere bested Rodriguez 7-5, 7-5 before Jackson Ross pushed the Roadrunners to match point, winning his singles match win (2-6, 6-4, 6-3) and giving the Roadrunners a 3-2 lead.
The Bulldogs had one last push, as Hollingworth downed Garrett Skelly 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 to knot the match up at three-all. It all came down to court one, as Tiago Torres and Sasha Trkulja were locked in a heated match.
Torres dropped the first set, 6-7 but was able to rebound in the second, winning 6-4 and forcing a set three which would decide the day's outcome. Torres took control early in the third set, gaining a 5-1 advantage. However, Trkulja battled back, rattling off three straight points to cut the score to 5-4. Torres gathered himself and took the final point, winning the set 6-4 and claiming a match victory for UTSA, 4-3.
