SAN ANTONIO — Lauren Roy swept the women's short sprints at the UTSA Invitational to highlight a haul of nine gold medals and 19 top-three finishes on a cold and damp Senior Day on Saturday at Park West Athletics Complex.
Combined with one victory and seven podium showings on Friday, the Roadrunners won 10 events and piled up 26 top-three performances during their annual home meet. The women were victorious in six events and registered 12 podium finishes, while the men tallied four golds and 14 total medals.
Roy sped to victory in the 100 meters and 200m in her home debut. The sophomore transfer from Northern Ireland opened her day on the track by cruising to a time of 11.86 seconds for a comfortable win ahead of runner-up Jada Hoffman of UTRGV (12.33). She then returned to the oval later in the afternoon to clock a 23.93 in the 200m, well ahead of second-place finisher Kallie Morrison of UIW (25.02).
Marie Duvigneau made it a UTSA sweep of the sprints on the women's side, as the senior from France circled in 56.42 to cross just ahead of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Tranasia Jones (56.90).
Alanah Yukich also joined the winner's circle by cruising to gold in the women's 400m hurdles. The senior from Australia and reigning Conference USA champion stopped the clock in 1:01.13 despite a stiff headwind down the final stretch to finish well ahead of runner-up Maia Maury of Texas A&M-Commerce (1:03.92).
The UTSA women also collected a pair of gold medals in the field, including in one of the first events of the final day. Ingeborg Gruenwald scored a close victory in the long jump with a leap of 5.78 meters (18-11.75). The Austrian actually tied with Kansas State's Shalom Olotu at that distance but claimed the win with a longer second-best jump, as the 2022 All-American reached that distance on her third and again on her final leap compared to Olotu's 5.58m effort.
Marilis Remmel picked up UTSA's first victory of the weekend with a 45.94m (150-9) measurement to claim gold in the women's javelin on Friday night.
On the men's side, Trevion McCalla put his speed on display by winning the 100m and helping the 4x100m relay to gold. The sophomore from Houston clocked a 10.73 to just beat UIW's Thomas Gignoux (10.75) and Texas State's Ashton Callahan (10.77).
Earlier in the afternoon, McCalla ran the third leg on UTSA's victorious 4x1, joining Antony Ma, Brice Chabot and Dennis Phillips for a time of 39.94 to place ahead of second-place UIW (40.64).
Mike Roth also claimed gold in the sprints with a win in the men's 400m. The sophomore from Canada, who was the C-USA Indoor High Point Scorer last month, circled the oval in 46.96 for the top time in the 23-man field.
Meanwhile, Jemuel Miller recorded his 10th collegiate victory in the triple jump on Saturday. The All-American from Barbados skipped to a distance of 15.54m (51-0) for his fourth gold in the event this calendar year.
In other Saturday action for the men, Christiaan Le Roux and Gabriel Binion finished 2-3 in the long jump. Le Roux, an All-American from South Africa, leaped 7.09m (23-3.25) for runner-up honors, while Binion measured 7.07m (23-2.5) for the bronze.
Binion, a transfer from Australia by way of Grand Canyon, also finished third in the triple jump with a mark of 14.59m (47-10.5).
Logan Masters picked up a third-place finish in the 400m with a 48.73 clocking, while Gabriel Green was third in the 400m hurdles in 55.49.
Back on the women's side, Abby Balli earned a silver medal in the 800m after clocking a 2:18.46, while Madi Henry collected bronze in the 1,500m with a 4:54.65.
Ayumi Kobayashi also posted a third-place finish in the 100m hurdles with a time of 14.71, while Mackenzie Grimes was third in the 400m hurdles (1:04.14).
UTSA closed the meet with a runner-up performance in the 4x400m relay, as Kaylyn Landry, Sarah Bell, Amanda Esparza and Joy Baxter teamed up for a 4:07.46 clocking.
The Roadrunners will return to action next Friday-Saturday, March 24-25, at the Charles Austin Classic in San Marcos, Texas.
