DENTON, Texas – North Texas (19-9, 5-1 C-USA) closed off the series sweep over UTSA softball (6-22, 2-4 C-USA) on Sunday with a big sixth inning that capped a 12-1 win over the Roadrunners at Lovelace Stadium.
The Mean Green extended their offensive momentum from Saturday's win over the Roadrunners into Sunday's finale, putting up three runs in each of the first two innings, then adding a seventh run via a run scored off a wild pitch in the third. The Roadrunners notched a baserunner in each frame, courtesy of two hits and a walk, but were unable to convert through the first three frames.
The Roadrunners finally made the turn in the top of the fourth. Junior first baseman Taylor Jensen smacked the first pitch she saw to the left center wall for a leadoff double. Sophomore third baseman Camryn Robillard then belted the next pitch from UNT's Ashley Peters beyond the same wall for her third home run of the year and a two-run UTSA score infusion, trimming the deficit to 7-2.
After entering in relief with two outs in the third inning, freshman Reagan Smith initially handcuffed the Mean Green. Smith collected a first-pitch pop-up to get out of the third and downed seven of the first eight batters she faced. However, UNT's most efficient hitters ended her run in the bottom of the sixth, putting up five consecutive base hits to end the game on a three-run Saleen Donohoe home run.
Six different Roadrunners collected a hit, with Robillard going 1-for-2 to provide UTSA's two RBI. Quieted at the plate throughout the rest of the series, UNT tallied 14 hits in the finale.
Peters (6-4) earned the win on a 6.0-inning start, allowing six hits and two runs, while striking out six and walking two. UTSA starter Jamie Gilbert (1-6) takes the loss, giving three runs on two hits and three walks before exiting in the first.
UTSA returns to action at home on Wednesday, March 22 at Roadrunner Field, hosting the rematch with Texas State (18-11-1) in a midweek matchup at 6:00 p.m. TXST snuck past UTSA on Feb. 23 with a 1-0 win in San Marcos.
