UTSA trio in medal contention after opening day of C-USA Outdoor Championships

DENTON, Texas — The UTSA multi-event trio of Jack Turner, Joel McFarlane and Sigrid Kleive is in medal contention at the Conference USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, which got underway Thursday at UNT Track & Field Stadium.
 
Turner leads the men's decathlon competition with McFarlane sitting in third following the first five events, while Kleive is in third place through four events in the women's heptathlon.
 
Turner, the two-time defending champion, has tallied 4,251 points halfway through the 10-event competition, good for a 73-point lead ahead of Rice's Grant Levesque. The five-time C-USA gold medalist opened the day by clocking a time of 10.44 seconds worth 989 points in a narrow runner-up finish behind Levesque's 10.43 clocking. The Exeter, England, native then took over first place after leaping 7.67 meters (25-2) in the long jump, a performance that earned him 977 more points.
 
After recording a mark of 12.75 meters (41-10) to add 652 points, Turner cleared 1.92m (6-3.5) in the high jump for 731 and then closed with a 902-point effort in the 400m after circling the oval in 48.14 seconds. 
 
Meanwhile, McFarlane has piled up 4,148 points at the midway point of the decathlon, just 30 behind Levesque. The Monikie, Scotland, native clocked a 10.55 for 963 points in the 100m before leaping 7.60m (24-11.25) to add 960 more. He logged the top shot put in the field with a measurement of 13.30m (43-7.75) for 686 points before closing the day with a 1.83m (6-0) clearance in the high jump and a 48.47 clocking in the 400m.
 
Competing in her first heptathlon as a Roadrunner, Kleive has put up 3,210 points through four of the seven events. The Norwegian clocked a 14.63 in the 100m hurdles to post 891 points out of the gates. She then soared over the bar at a height of 1.76m (5-9.25) to add 928 points in the high jump, jumping from seventh to third place. 
 
Kleive registered a mark of 11.77m (38-07.5) worth 646 points, inching into the runner-up position before settling back into third following a 27.29 clocking in the 200m.
 
A pair of Roadrunners sit in position to score points with a top-eight finish. Justin Wright is in ninth place with 3,017 points in the decathlon, while Maren Wilms has totaled 2,671 points and is 10th in the heptathlon with three disciplines remaining.
 
Friday's action will kick off at 2 p.m. with the men's hammer throw and continue with the second day of the heptathlon and decathlon, as well as the women's hammer at 4:30 p.m. and the 10,000-meter races at night.
