SAN ANTONIO – Each earning the distinction for the first time in their careers, UTSA softball's Sophie Campbell and Ciarra Mata have been named to the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District Team.
Formerly known as CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America), CSC's 2023 Academic All-District Softball Teams, selected by College Sports Communicators, recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the court and in the classroom. The pair represent only the third and fourth Roadrunners named to the organization's Academic All-District team, succeeding first baseman Riley Grunberg in 2022.
A sophomore for the Roadrunners at first base, Campbell played in 41 games this season with 31 starts in 2023. She batted .221 with a .351 on-base percentage and 17 hits, including four doubles and one home run, batting in 11 runs and scoring nine times. Defensively, Campbell ranked second on the team with 189 putouts, six assists and a team second-most nine double plays. In her UTSA career, Campbell has 45 starts in 62 games over the past two years. In the classroom, Campbell holds a 3.71 cumulative grade point average in Multidisciplinary Studies with a main focus of Business, as well as focuses in Health and Sociology. She has been named to the UTSA Dean's List once and Honor Roll twice and was twice named to Conference USA Commissioner's Honor Roll.
A senior graduating in the fall and a staple in left field for the Roadrunners, Mata started in 45-of-48 games played this year, batting .204. Logged 22 hits, including six doubles, recording 14 RBI and 11 runs. Mata recorded 98 putouts for the most outs among outfielders, collecting three assists and a .971 fielding percentage. In her UTSA career, Mata accumulated 48 hits with nine doubles, two home runs, 36 runs, 24 RBI and 176 putouts. In the classroom, Mata has earned a 3.73 grade point average in Interdisciplinary Studies focused in Early Childhood to 12 Special Education. She has been named to the UTSA President's List twice, twice to Dean's List and three times to the Honor Roll. She has also earned the Conference USA Commissioner's Academic Medal two times and was named to the C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll four times.
Academic All‐District honorees advance to the CSC Academic All‐America® ballot. First‐, second and third‐team Academic All‐America® honorees will be announced June 6.
