SAN ANTONIO — UTSA head football coach Jeff Traylor announced that the program has signed Corey Lucius Jr. to the 2023 class.
A star linebacker at Tampa Bay Tech High School in Tampa, Florida, Lucius Jr. recorded 137 total tackles, 73 solo stops, nine tackles for loss, five sacks, two interceptions, one fumble recoveries and five pass breakups in 12 games as a senior in 2022. He played for Tampa Catholic High School as a junior, posting 59 tackles, four sacks and three interceptions in 2021 to help the Crusaders to a 7-4 record and a berth in the Class 4A playoffs.
UTSA's 2023 class now numbers 28, including 18 who hail from Texas with seven from the Greater Houston Area, five from East Texas and three apiece from the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex and Central Texas. There are two from Georgia and Mississippi and one each from Alabama, Florida, Hawai'i, Louisiana and Pennsylvania, as well as the program's first player from American Samoa.
The group features an even split of 14 transfers and 14 who come from the high school ranks. Of the transfers, six hail from an FBS, FCS or NCAA Division II program while eight last played at a junior college.
Fifteen members of the class are offensive players, while 13 are pegged for the defensive side of the ball.
