CHENGDU, China – UTSA men's tennis junior-to-be Tiago Torres is wrapping up his summer on the international stage, having been selected to represent his home country of Portugal at the 2023 Summer World University Games, presented by International University Sports Federation (FISU). Men's tennis play begins on Saturday, July 29.
At just 20 years old and coming out of Lisbon, Torres will be one of two representatives of Portugal at the games, coming off a first-team All-Conference USA performance in 2023 – putting together an 8-11 singles/11-9 doubles season for the 41st-ranked Roadrunners.
Competition begins at the Sichuan International Tennis Centre in Chengdu, China, on July 29 at 10 a.m. local time and will continue through a six-round bracket to the finals on Saturday, August 5. Torres will play doubles alongside Francisco Rocha, who hails from Porto and was a graduate student last year for Middle Tennessee. The pair are the eighth seed to open the games. Additionally, Torres will be competing in the men's singles.
"It's a big honor to represent my country," Torres said. "The best collegiate players from around the world participate and I am very excited to begin competing here."
Torres will open singles competition on court two in the round of 64 against Columbia's Alejandro Moncada Marin. The winner will move on to face No. 8 seed Hikaru Shiraishi from Japan. Fans can view the overall singles bracket draw here. Beginning on Sunday in doubles, Torres and Rocha will have a first round BYE and face Hong Kong's Marvin Mang Hin Lee and Ethan Yi Hang Leung. This level of the international stage isn't unfamiliar territory to Torres, who came to UTSA as a three-time Portugal National Champion in doubles, won the national Portuguese Masters U16 and participated in the 2017 Junior Olympics in Győr, Hungary – advancing to the third round.
