"It's a great opening weekend, said coach Carol Price-Torok at the conclusion of the tournament. "Obviously, wins are wins … right now, we're trying to stay organized and stay together. We're putting things together with a lot of newcomers and not a lot of returners, so it's exciting to see all that come to fruition with all the hard work they had in at two-a-days."
Wiepert and Krienke each boasted four service aces, while Wiepert dished out 42 assists and recorded four blocks. Krienke, meanwhile, launched nine successful attacks and posted a match-high six blocks. Senior Aliah Giroux was the match leader in digs with 12, as junior Ellie Turner totaled nine and sophomore Caroline Krueger eight. Offensively, sophomore Mia Soerensen topped the kill leaderboard, logging 12, with junior Faye Wilbricht matching Krienke with nine.
Terminations by Soerensen, senior Cansu Günaydin, Wiepert, and Wilbricht helped the Roadrunners jump out to a 7-3 lead in the first frame. TAMUC slowly fought their way back, prompting a UTSA timeout with a 15-13 score line favoring the Roadrunners. It was back to business for UTSA coming out of the break as consecutive terminations by Günaydin and Wilbricht rebuilt the lead ahead of a Wiepert ace that put the squad up 21-15. Coppedge, Soerensen, and Günaydin logged kills shortly after, confirming a 25-19 victory.
The Lions gained a slim 5-4 lead to open the second stanza. UTSA, however, went on to claim six of the subsequent seven rallies to go up 10-6. A Lion point halted the streak, but Wilbricht, Soerensen, and Coppedge posted kills en route to a 16-9 edge. With UTSA leading 23-18, the Lions surged, stealing the next five and inducing a timeout. After regrouping, Soerensen fired one over the net for a kill, ahead of back-to-back service errors that saw a 25-23 win for the Roadrunners.
TAMUC took the first rally in the third set before a Soerensen kill sparked a six-score UTSA surge that featured multiple aces by Giroux. The Lions responded quickly, picking up seven of the following eight points to earn a 9-7 lead. UTSA then strung three together with a kill by Wilbricht, delivering an 11-10 edge for her squad. From there, the teams exchanged blows before TAMUC swiped six straight rallies, allowing them to take the set 25-18 and deal UTSA their lone set loss on the weekend.
Back-to-back kills for Krienke opened the fourth set, ahead of an ace for Wiepert that saw UTSA lead 9-3. Up 11-6, a seven-point Roadrunner run that saw terminations by Soerensen, Krienke, and Wiepert put the squad firmly in the driver's seat with an 18-6 edge. Wilbricht then capped off the victory with a final kill for a 25-11 win that clinched the Roadrunner's third triumph of the tournament.
UTSA will remain in the Alamo City for the next few contests as they host the Roadrunner Classic with matches on the docket with Lamar, Delaware, and Tarleton State, beginning on Friday, Sept. 1, in the Convocation Center.
