Avdeyev named ITA Regional Chair

SAN ANTONIO – After spending one year as a member of Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regional Board, fifth-year men's tennis head coach Sergey Avdeyev has been named the ITA Texas Regional Chair, supervising the operation of the Regional Committee, Regional tournaments and polling within the 15-member Texas Region.

"I am honored to take the lead and chair the Texas Region," Avdeyev said of his promotion within the committee. "There are a total of 15 DI teams and currently it's the strongest region in the country. I look forward to growing popularity for our sport and representing our Region at the national level."

As ITA Regional Chair, Avdeyev will oversee the Texas Region's five-member Board Committee, which offers input into the ITA Rankings and vote for the Top 100 singles player, Top 50 doubles teams and Top 75 collegiate teams. Avdeyev will play an administrative role in running the ITA Regional Tournament for the state of Texas and will lead the committee in delivering votes on rankings, proposing new ideas, voicing member schools' concerns and opinions and recommending changes within the ITA.

The Texas Region is comprised of every NCAA Division I school in the state of Texas, which finished the 2023 season with eight teams in the national rankings – two in the top five. The NCAA is divided up in to 12 regions. Joining Avdeyev on the committee will be Grant Chen (SMU), Juan Nunez (Abilene Christian), Michael Woodson (Baylor) and
David Roditi (TCU).

Avdeyev was instrumental in the development of Sebastian Rodriguez and Alan Magadan who earned the No. 6 doubles ranking after their impressive run in ITA Regionals, claiming the Texas Region title and reaching the National Quarterfinal. The pair also qualified for the NCAA Doubles Championships in Orlando, Florida, and reached the second round. A rapidly rising program on the national scene, UTSA broke numerous school ranking records in 2023, topping out at 34th and earning the program's first NCAA At-Large berth after finishing the season with 18 wins as Conference USA Runner-up. Along the way, UTSA produced an NCAA-leading 14-match win streak that included six wins over ranked opponents, and was named ITA's Team of the Month for March 2023.
