UTSA announces addition of Mulamba to 2023 soccer staff

SAN ANTONIO – UTSA head soccer coach Derek Pittman announced on Wednesday, August 9, that the Roadrunners have added Peter Mulamba to the staff as an assistant coach. Mulamba joins UTSA to start the season following five years as the head coach at Alamo City Soccer Club of the United Premier Soccer League (UPSL).

"Peter is a top-quality coach and tremendous man of character. I am excited to add him to our staff of high-level coaches," Pittman said. "I have watched Peter run sessions for years with teams and small groups, and he is a fantastic addition for our players both technically and tactically. His main role will be to help our attackers be more efficient around goal to finish their chances and the overall development of our team technically. From a recruiting standpoint, Peter is very familiar with the pool of talent in South Texas, and I am thankful to have him on staff as we continue to move this program forward."

Leading Alamo City men's semi-professional team for seven split-calendar seasons, Mulamba racked up a 53-11-11 record as head coach – a 78 percent winning percentage. Alamo City was ranked No. 8 in the UPSL in 2023 and won their fifth Central Conference Texas South Division Championship under his leadership this Summer – making their seventh playoff appearance and fourth trip to the national round of 32. While coaching ACSC, he worked with several players who were promoted to full professional contracts, including Mikey Maldonado (North Carolina FC), Vincent Floria (Granada Club de Fútbol), Habib Balarabe (Alicante CF) and John-Michael Villareal (Alicante CF). While playing, he also served as the club's Director of Recruiting.

"I have known Coach Pittman for a few years now and have gotten to know him not only as a coach, but as a friend whom I consider a brother," Mulamba said. "It's been amazing to see the program evolve over the years and his vision for it coming to fruition, culminating with the teams' crowning as C-USA Champions. But more importantly, to watch the development of the players under his guidance, not just as athletes but as people, is a bigger win I believe than even the championships.

"Seeing the staff he has brought in, Ben who is an unbelievable coach and human being, the same could be said about Colleen; both bags of experience behind them as well – those hires show me that there is ambition to continue to grow and be successful because they are coaches of the highest caliber who will no doubt aid in taking this program to the next level. I am absolutely buzzing to be here, eager to learn from these three, and eager to contribute however possible to this team that from my vantage point is full of talent and high-character players who are hungry for more success on and off the pitch, which is a coaches' dream to work with."

Continually working to develop new players since his playing days, Mulamba has also been coaching with the Players Academy of Soccer Skills (P.A.S.S.) private soccer training since 2018, and his family has operated FalseNin9 Soccer Development out of Austin and San Antonio since 2020, providing technical training to players of all levels.

His playing career began at Brescia University in Kentucky, where he was the team's Freshman of the Year as well as Newcomer of the Year, and later transferring to NCAA Division I UT Rio Grande Valley. Unfortunately, an injury ended his collegiate career just five games into his time with the Vaqueros, prompting him to transfer to UTSA where he earned his degree in Kinesiology with an Athletic Medicine concentration.

Mulamba returned to action once more as a player before shifting his focus fully to coaching, playing semi-professionally for the San Antonio Runners Soccer Club and helping the squad to an 11-0-3 record, a Fall 2018 UPSL Central Conference Heart Division Championship and a Spring 2019 appearance in the 2019 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup. His soccer playing journey began as a prep star at Laredo St. Augustine Catholic, where was a three-time TAPPS All-State honoree named to the TAPPS All-Tournament Team after leading his team to the first final four in school history during his senior year.
