Ramos joins women's basketball staff as Player Development Coordinator

The San Antonio native recently graduated from San Diego State

"I am thrilled to add Sophia to our staff. Anytime we can add someone who has played at a high level and is a product of the high school and club systems here in San Antonio, it's a huge positive for our program. Sophia adds wisdom as a former student-athlete and another set of eyes and ears for our coaches. In addition, she will be able to help facilitate community relations to enhance NIL and support our program."

SAN ANTONIO — UTSA women's basketball head coach Karen Aston officially announced a new hire on Wednesday, with San Antonio native Sophia Ramos joining the staff as the team's newest Player Development Coordinator.

Ramos joins the program after recently graduating from San Diego State, where she obtained a Master of Arts in education as well as a Bachelor of Science in kinesiology while representing the Aztecs as a standout performer on the court.

She received her master's in August of 2023 with an emphasis placed on counseling, while her undergrad degree was centered around fitness specialty and came with a minor in psychology. Additionally, she was issued an advanced certificate in restorative justice practice and trauma-informed care.

In the classroom, Ramos was a dean's list selection in the Spring of 2022 and a Scholar Athlete from the Fall of 2019 to the Spring of 2023. She was also a Mountain West's All-Academic Team member for the 2019-20 and 2020-21 athletic seasons.

She's previously held a pair of coaching positions, first coaching elementary and middle school-aged girls basketball with San Antonio Finest, a premier club that has produced a wealth of collegiate athletes. The organization's alums include the likes of Tesha Smith and Carlie Heineman, who represented the Roadrunners in the Convocation Center, as well as current sophomore Alexis Parker and incoming freshman Aysia Proctor, who is set to don navy and orange for the first time in the 2023-24 season. Ramos also served as a camp coach with the San Antonio Spurs in the summer of 2023, leading station work, coaching ages 6-8, and completing player evaluations.

Ramos received many accolades on the court, including All-Conference honors in four seasons. She was selected for the MW All-Tournament team in 2019 and 2023, a three-time Mountain West Player of the Week, and a Raising the B.A.R. All-Tournament pick. Additionally, she was named College Sports Madness High-Major National Player of the Week after a 32-point and 11-rebound performance against New Mexico in which she tied a school record with 16 made free throws.

Ramos is no stranger to the Alamo City, as she recorded over 2,000 points for Incarnate Word High School before graduating in 2018.
