SAN MARCOS, Texas — The No. 50-ranked UTSA women’s golf team broke the school record for low team round behind Camryn Carreon’s program-record 64 on the final day of the Jim West Challenge on Monday at Kissing Tree Golf Club (par 72/6,010 yards).
The Roadrunners posted a 15-under-par 273 behind Carreon’s 8-under scorecard and red numbers from Olivia Williams (69), Daniela Abonce (70) and Morgan Ellison (70). That total eclipsed the previous school standard of 13-under 275 set last month in the second round of the Sam Golden Invitational.
UTSA finished with a 14-under 850 (286-291-273) to end up in a tie for seventh place with TCU, one shot ahead of No. 43 UNLV in the 13-team field. The 14-under team total ranks as the second-best 54-hole score in program history behind only the 27-under 837 registered at the Sam Golden Invitational in September. It also marks the third time in four tournaments this fall that the Roadrunners have finished under par as a team.
Meanwhile, Carreon broke her own school record for the low individual round with her 64, a one-shot improvement from the 7-under 65 she carded in the final round while winning the Trinity Forest Invitational this past March. Entering the day in a tie for 39th at 2-over 146, the senior from San Antonio wrote down eight birdies on her bogey-free final-round scorecard.
Starting on No. 12, she followed a par with birdies on four of the next six holes before moving to the front side, where she logged three more birdies during a four-hole stretch on Nos. 2-4. After closing out that side with four pars, the four-time individual champion concluded her day with a birdie on the 349-yard, par-4 10th and a par on the 419-yard, par-4 11th.
Carreon’s record scorecard jettisoned her up the individual leaderboard, as she climbed into a tie for 16th at 6-under 210 for the week. The all-conference performer now has posted 10 par-or-better rounds, including nine sub-70 scores, in 12 total rounds this fall to move her average to 69.33 for the season.
Williams matched her best score as a Roadrunner with a 3-under 69 on Monday. The sophomore from Worcestershire, England, registered five birdies en route to her fourth par-or-better round of the season. She also jumped eight places into a share of 31st at 1-under 215 after opening with a pair of 73s on Sunday.
Abonce and Ellison each finished with a share of 34th place one shot behind Williams at even-par 216. Abonce, a sophomore from Mexico, posted a final-round 70 that was highlighted by a trio of birdies, while Ellison, a junior out of Georgia, also had three birdies to close out her week.
Maria Bastarrica rounded out the UTSA lineup in a tie for 42nd at 1-over 217. After opening with a 72-71—143 on Sunday, the freshman from Spain turned in a 74 on Monday that featured three birdies.
SMU claimed the team title with a 38-under 826 behind individual medalist Ellie Szeryk, who posted a 16-under 200 (67-70-63).
The tournament concluded the fall schedule for the Roadrunners, who will announce their spring slate soon.
