Magadan and Pinho pace UTSA at ITA All-American Championships

TULSA, Okla. – Heading out to the Sooner State for their second week of fall competition, the UTSA men’s tennis team saw five pre-selected Roadrunners go head-to-head with some of the best players in the nation at the ITA All-American Championships. Rising the highest for UTSA, senior Alan Magadan and sophomore Tomás Pinho both advanced through the pre-qualifying draw and wrapped their tournament in the qualifying round of 64 on Monday at Tulsa’s Michael D. Case Tennis Center.

Pinho (Oporto, Portugal) earned four victories on the court before going to three sets in an elimination loss to Indiana’s Sam Landau (5-7, 6-3, 3-6) on Monday morning in the round of 64. Pinho rallied past Louisville’s Will Mayew (5-7, 6-4, 6-0) in the opening round to defeat Rice’s Arthus de la Bassetiere (6-74, 6-2, 6-3), Tulane’s Alex Bancila (6-1, 7-62) and Loyola Marymount’s Arthur Pantino (6-4, 6-2) en route to the qualification draw.

Magadan (McAllen, Texas) opened up with a 2-6, 6-0, 6-3 comeback over Drake’s Olle Sonesson Lidholt, before topping Belmont’s Tomas Luis (6-3, 7-5), Florida State’s Justin Lyons (6-4, 3-6, 7-63) and North Carolina’s Will Peters (7-5, 6-2) before falling in an all-out, three-set battle with Tulane’s Luka Petrovic (6-72, 6-3, 6-72) in the Monday-morning round of 64 opener.

Junior Tiago Torres (Lisbon, Portugal) also registered an opening-round victory over Louisville’s Andre Steinbach (7-63, 6-3) before Illinois State’s Nam Pham eliminated him in a three-setter (6-4, 0-6, 1-6).

Torres and Magadan were selected for the doubles field and battled Pepperdine’s duo of Edward Winter and Linus Carlsson Halldin to a tiebreaker loss, 7-5, 6-75, 4-10.

Quoting Coach Sergey Avdeyev
"Great effort by our guys this weekend. I saw a lot of improvement from the last tournament into this weekend. We finally had the desired level. We got some great matches and momentum from it moving forward."

Following 15 days back on the practice courts, the UTSA Roadrunners will travel to Fort Worth and TCU’s Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center & Bartzen Varsity Courts for the ITA South Region Championships. A pair of Roadrunners proved to be breakout performers at last year’s edition in Waco, with Magadan and partner Sebastian Rodriguez running the table to the program’s first doubles Regional Championship – the pair advancing all the way to the national quarterfinal round in San Diego.
