BEAUMONT, Texas – The UTSA women’s tennis team wrapped up the Joe Pyburn Memorial Tournament, hosted by Lamar on Oct. 7-8, with three champions in singles competition and two more in doubles action.
In flight A doubles, Aleksandra Zlatatova and Vittoria Baccino defeated Sam Houston’s Sahithi Vutukuru and India Fenieys by 7-5 in the quarterfinals. The duo then advanced to the semifinal round where they beat Texas A&M-Corpus Christi’s Valeria Cherfus and Kateryna Rublevska, 6-1. In the championship round, Zlatarova and Baccino faced another Islanders duo, Ana Veroux and Palina Saulevich, defeating them by 6-1 to win the flight.
In the same flight, Ekua Youri and Fatima Gutierrez fell to Veroux and Saulevich in the first round, 6-3. The duo then moved to the consolation draw where they faced Lamar’s Megan Do and Leah Kuruvilla, falling 6-4 in the qualifying round.
In singles action, Zlatarova fell to Sam Houston’s Paula Cerda in two hard-fought sets of 7-6 (5) and 7-6 (4) in flight A. In the consolation draw, she then defeated the Cardinals’ Kuruvilla in three sets (6-0, 0-6, 10-5).
In flight B, freshman Baccino took down Lamar’s Nouray Metwally by both set scores of 6-4 in the semifinal round. Matched up with the Bearkats’ Vutukuru, Baccino battled through three sets and ultimately won the flight (2-6, 7-5, 10-6).
In the semifinal round of flight C, Gutierrez beat Lamar’s Do by both sets of 6-1. In the championship round, she took down the Islanders’ Rublevska by 7-5 and 6-1.
In flight D, freshman Youri defeated Sam Houston’s Roberta Sechi by 6-3 and 6-1 in the semifinals. She then beat Texas A&M-Corpus Christi’s Saulevich by sets of 6-2 and 6-3 to win flight D.
