'Runners fall to Bobcats in overtime bout, 65-57

Texas State claimed the Battle of I-35

SAN ANTONIO — On Thursday, the UTSA women's basketball team suffered a 65-57 overtime defeat at the hands of Texas State in nonconference action inside the Convocation Center.

The Roadrunners (4-3, 0-0 AAC) fell to the Bobcats (4-2, 0-0 Sun Belt) in the Battle of I-35, despite an 11-point, nine-rebound performance by senior Elyssa Coleman

Matching Coleman's point total, sophomore Sidney Love was an even 50% from the field, and Siena Guttadauro tied her career best with a trio of three-pointers.

On the rebound leader board, freshman Aysia Proctor and sophomore Cheyenne Rowe weren't far behind Coleman, each hauling in seven, while newcomer Idara Udo recorded six. Additionally, senior Kyra White led the contest in assists, dropping five dimes to go along with seven points.

Coleman kicked off the scoring, finishing a transition layup before sinking a pair of free throws for a 4-4 tie midway through the first. Love then converted a fast break bucket ahead of an 11-0 Bobcat run. White halted the surge with a jumper for a 15-8 score line at the conclusion of the period.

The 'Runners started the second on a 6-2 spurt, but the Bobcats responded, building up a 22-14 advantage. UTSA then rallied, using consecutive triples by Love and Guttadauro, as well as an Udo transition layup to knot the contest at 22. TXST then worked a 28-23 lead before a sophomore Madison Cockrell layup sent the 'Runners into the locker room down 28-25.

Proctor opened the third quarter with a bucket, as a Coleman free throw created a 28-28 deadlock. After exchanging blows, Guttadauro nailed her second triple of the game to put the Roadrunners up 35-34. TXST responded with a three-pointer of their own en route to a 42-37 lead. Proctor tickled the twine once more in the stanza, resulting in a 42-39 score entering the final frame.

Early in the fourth, Love and Udo hit back-to-back shots to hand the 'Runners a 45-44 edge. Five straight for the Bobcats put TXST in the driver's seat, but the battle continued with a Coleman bucket and a three-pointer for Guttadauro, resulting in a 52-51 UTSA advantage with a minute to play. The Bobcats were fouled and went 1-of-2 from the charity stripe, promoting a 52-52 tie and overtime.

TXST surged midway through the extra period, working a 61-55 lead. A Love layup kept UTSA in the fight, but the Bobcats hit their free throws en route to a 65-57 victory.

UTSA will remain in the Convocation Center as they match up with UTEP in a Family Day game on Sunday, with tipoff set for noon.
