UTSA drops tennis opener at No. 22 Oklahoma

NORMAN, Okla. – The UTSA men’s tennis team (0-1) opened up the season on the road at No. 22 Oklahoma (1-0) on Saturday. Forced indoors at OU’s Gregg Wadley Indoor Tennis Pavilion due to crashing winter temperatures, the Roadrunners fell to the Sooners, 5-2, unable to pick up key singles victories down the line after claiming the doubles point.

OU notched the first victory on the board on court two in doubles, but the tandem of Alan Magadan and Tomás Pinho evened things up with a 6-4 victory over Alex Martinez and Kholo Montsi on court one. On three, Tiago Torres and Miguel Alonso rallied from a 4-5 deficit to claim a 7-65 victory over Luis Alvarez and Jordan Hasson and place the early advantage in UTSA’s hands.

In singles play, Magadan also picked up a win over Justin Schlageter on the second court, 6-4, 7-64, but No. 115 Pinho also rallied to a third set against Jordan Hasson, falling 6-3, 3-6, 10-7.

Quoting Coach Sergey Avdeyev
"We got off to a good start. Happy the way we played doubles and some singles positions we had opportunities to make it closer than the score reflects, but we lost too many close points. We definitely need to improve some things that did not work well today."
