SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA women’s tennis team earned a clean sweep, 7-0, over St. Mary’s (TX) to open up spring competition on Thursday at the UTSA Tennis Center.
In doubles action, the duo of Aleksandra Zlatarova and Cassie McLay defeated the Rattlers’ Selina Wu and Paula Garrote by 6-1 to open up play. Freshman Ekua Youri paired with sophomore Fatima Gutierrez to take down Kyndall Quiroz and Bailey Godwin, 6-1, and secure the doubles point for UTSA. Magda Tuells and Vittoria Baccino finished the doubles sweep by defeating Stela Sifuentes and Janel Ospanova by 6-2.
Tuells opened up singles play with a quick win over Godwin at the sixth court with both set scores of 6-1. Playing No. 4, Youri followed shortly after with a win over Quiroz on sets of 6-1 and 6-0. Gutierrez clinched the winning fourth point with a win at the second court, 6-2 and 6-1.
At the top court, Zlatarova extended the Roadrunners’ lead to 5-0, earning set scores of 6-2 and 6-4 over the Rattlers’ Wu. Baccino battled at the third court and ultimately defeated Garrote by sets of 7-6 and 6-4. McLay completed the UTSA sweep at the fifth court, battling through sets of 7-6 and 7-5.
The Roadrunners host ACU on Friday at 1 p.m. (CT) to cap off the season-opening week at the UTSA Tennis Center.
