DALLAS — The UTSA women's basketball team suffered a 75-58 defeat at the hands of SMU on Saturday in American Athletic Conference action inside Moody Coliseum.
The Roadrunners (10-9, 4-4 The American) fell to the Mustangs (10-10, 4-5 The American), despite a solid performance by senior Kyra White.
White finished one point shy of a double-double as she hauled in a game-high 11 rebounds and dished out seven assists. Redshirt junior Elyssa Coleman, sophomore Sidney Love, and freshman Idara Udo all scored 11 across the contest, with Udo pulling down nine rebounds and Coleman six.
The 'Runners struck first, starting the first quarter on a 6-0 run featuring makes by newcomer Aysia Proctor, Udo, and Love. The Mustangs broke their scoreless streak, ahead of a White and-one that saw a 13-6 score line. SMU kept battling, using a layup as time expired to trim their deficit to four entering the stanza.
The Mustangs then used a pair of triples to spark an 8-2 run, delivering a 21-19 Mustang lead. Coleman connected on a jumper, knotting the contest at 21, ahead of a Love three-pointer and a sophomore Maya Linton layup that rebuilt a 26-23 UTSA advantage. Freshman Emma Lucio increased the Roadrunners edge to seven with a trey of her own, but SMU responded, scoring eight straight to go up 31-30. Coleman nailed one from downtown, resulting in a 33-31 UTSA edge, but SMU again answered, working a 33-33 tie. The battle raged on as SMU banked in a three-pointer to kick-start a 6-2 run that issued a 40-37 Mustang lead entering the locker room.
SMU knocked down a jumper to increase its advantage to six, working a 47-41 score line early in the third. A Love layup kept things close, but back-to-back Mustang makes resulted in a 51-43 lead midway through the frame. Each team made baskets down the stretch, and another Love bucket sent the squads into the final frame, with SMU leading 54-49.
The Mustangs sunk a three-pointer in the fourth to extend their advantage to eight, and the squads exchanged blows en route to a 61-53 score. Shortly after, another basket increased the SMU lead to 12 with under four minutes in the contest. The Mustangs then finished strong en route to a 75-58 victory.
The Roadrunners will now return to the Convocation Center, where a midweek tilt against North Texas awaits, with tipoff set for 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
