SAN ANTONIO — The UTSA women's basketball team took down the American Athletic Conference's leader on Sunday, as they bested UAB, 76-58, inside the Convocation Center. The win represented the third occasion of the 2023-24 season in which the 'Runners dethroned the league's top team, this time doing it behind a quartet of double-digit scorers.
The Roadrunners (12-10, 6-6 The American) took down the Blazers (17-7, 8-4 The American) after sinking 32 shots at a 45% clip. UTSA also pulled down 13 more rebounds than their opponent, scored 22 more points in the paint, and recorded twice as many assists.
Freshman Aysia Proctor led the contest in scoring, dropping 14, while senior Kyra White logged 12 points. Sophomore Sidney Love put up 11, and senior Jordyn Jenkins matched her total and collected six rebounds in her season debut. Additionally, Proctor tied freshman Idara Udo with a team-leading seven rebounds, and Love topped the contest with six assists.
UAB started off hot, building a 10-2 lead in a stretch that saw only Proctor score for UTSA. From there, sophomore Madison Cockrell went 1-of-2 from the charity stripe, with a classmate Cheyenne Rowe put-back trimming the deficit to five. Jenkins then connected from beyond the arc, resulting in a 10-8 score line. The Blazers logged a bucket ahead of a Rowe triple that put UTSA within one. UAB then ended the period, scoring six of the final eight points to grow an 18-11 edge.
The Roadrunners launched a 10-2 surge to open the second stanza, in a stretch that featured multiple White makes and a Proctor triple. Now leading 24-20, UAB halted the run with a layup, but UTSA remained scorching, scoring the following six points en route to a 32-24 halftime advantage.
The squads went blow for the majority of the third quarter, as an Udo layup saw a 45-36 score midway through the frame. Jenkins, sophomore Alexis Parker, and Udo all hit shots as the period neared its close, building a 51-38 advantage with 10 minutes remaining in the contest.
A White jumper opened the final frame, ahead of a Love and-one that led to a 60-40 Roadrunner lead. UTSA then kept the opposition at bay, cruising to a 76-58 victory.
The 'Runners will hit the road for their next two contests, first visiting Tulsa on Wednesday with a 6:30 p.m. tipoff at the Reynolds Center in Oklahoma before battling North Texas on Sunday at 2 p.m. in Denton, Texas.
