Roadrunners off to The Bahamas for Nexus Collegiate

SAN ANTONIO — The UTSA women’s golf team will travel to The Bahamas, to play in the Nexus Collegiate, which will be held on Monday-Wednesday, Feb. 12-14, at Albany Golf Club (par 72/6,544 yards) located on the island of New Providence.

In what will mark the program’s second international trip and first visit to The Bahamas, the Roadrunners will feature a lineup of Camryn Carreon, Morgan Ellison, Daniela Abonce, Federica Tavelli Westerlund and Olivia Williams, while Maria Bastarrica will compete as an individual.

Checking in at No. 60 in the latest SCOREBOARD NCAA Division 1 Rankings, UTSA will face a tough field that includes Boston College, No. 29 Houston, Illinois, Iowa State, No. 37 Kentucky, No. 35 Michigan, No. 28 Mississippi State, No. 46 North Texas, Texas Tech and No. 45 Tulsa.

The Roadrunners are coming off a tie for eighth-place at the Paradise Invitational last week in Boca Raton, Florida. Carreon led the way by tying for 12th with a 1-over-par 217 (75-67-75).

Carreon paces UTSA with a 69.33 stroke average and five top-20 finishes, including back-to-back victories last fall. The senior from San Antonio has logged 11 par-or-better scorecards — including 10 sub-70 scores — in 15 rounds this season.

Abonce stands second on the team with a 72.8 scoring average to go along with a top finish of second with a 12-under 204 (68-68-68) at the Sam Golden Invitational last September.

Ellison boasts a 72.93 average and a pair of top-15 showings, including a tie for 13th at the Sam Golden Invitational after firing a 7-under 209 (68-70-71).

Tavelli made her UTSA debut last week and the senior transfer from Sweden tied for 50th with a 227 (74-78-75).

Williams owns a 73.0 stroke average and a top finish of 10th after she carded a 1-under 215 (73-73-69) at the Jim West Challenge in October.

Bastarrica has recorded a 74.93 scoring average and a top finish of 27th at the Dale McNamara Invitational during her true freshman campaign.
