Cougars top 'Runners on Day One of Houston Classic

Junior Camryn Robillard smashed two home runs across the contest

HOUSTON — Junior Camryn Robillard launched two home runs as the UTSA softball team suffered a 15-3 run-rule defeat at the hands of Houston on Thursday, in what represented the opener of the Houston Classic tournament at the Cougar Softball Stadium.

The Roadrunners (0-6, 0-0 The American) fell to the Cougars (5-1. 0-0 Big 12), as senior Kenzi Schultz (0-4) was tagged with a loss, while Shelby Smith (2-0) earned the win for Houston.

Robillard went 2-for-2 as her round-trippers drove in all three runs for UTSA. Additionally, the Roadrunners saw collegiate debuts from Meredith Schmitt and Sydney McReynolds

The Cougars strung back-to-back singles together in the bottom of the first to score the contest's first run.

Robillard responded in the top of the second, smashing a two-run bomb that drove in junior Sophie Campbell, who reached base on a leadoff single.

Houston then used a grand slam and a two-run home run to push six across in the second, building a 7-2 lead. The Cougars added two more in the third before Robillard sent a solo shot over the left field wall in the top of the fourth, seeing a 7-3 score line.

The opposition scored six more in the bottom of the frame, and UTSA could not push across a run in the top of the fifth, ending the contest early with Houston winning 15-3.

UTSA will look to bounce back on Friday as they battle Northwestern State at 11 a.m. and Nicholls at 1:30 p.m. as a part of the Houston Classic.
