DORADO, Puerto Rico — The final round of the Dorado Beach Collegiate has been canceled due to rain, leaving the UTSA men’s golf team in a tie for fourth place in the 17-team field.
Jack Wehman ended up with a share of fifth place to help guide the Roadrunners to their second straight top-five showing. The junior from Austin Vandegrift High School fired a 9-under-par 135 on the 7,112-yard TPC Dorado Beach Sugarcane Course, good for the second-best 36-hole total in program history. After opening with a 67 on Sunday, he carded a 68 on Monday for his third straight and sixth overall par-or-better round of the season. For the week, he had seven birdies and two eagles and played the par fives at 8-under, tops in the field of 107 golfers.
In the team standings, UTSA finished in a tie for fourth with West Virginia at 24-under 552. The Roadrunners opened with a 10-under 278 on Sunday and 24 hours later turned in a season-best, 14-under 274, which is tied for the sixth-best team score in program history. UTSA ended up two shots ahead of Illinois State and five in front of a tie for seventh between Valparaiso and ULM, while finishing one stroke behind Kent State and four back of second-place Ball State.
All five players in the lineup for UTSA finished the event with a red number on the scoreboard.
Hunter Bott tied for 23rd with a 5-under 139. The senior from Montgomery, Texas, carded a 67 on Sunday before posting an even-par 72 on Monday.
David Harrison ended up in 28th place at 4-under 140, as the senior out of Trophy Club, Texas, opened with a 72 and then logged a 4-under 68, the best round of his UTSA career.
Brock Blais also turned in a 68 on Monday to end up in a tie for 38th at 3-under 141, as the freshman from Florida had a 73 in the opening round.
Walker Franklin rounded out the UTSA lineup with a share of 48th at 2-under 142, as the junior transfer carded rounds of 72 and 70.
Playing as an individual, Bryson Thurston tied for 85th with a 72-76—148.
Host UNC Greensboro captured the team title with a 37-under 539, while Kent State’s Chris Vandette claimed medalist honors with a 14-under 130 (64-66).
The Roadrunners will return to action on March 9-11 at The Hayt in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.
