'Runners end road trip with 5-3 victory over Kennesaw State

Senior Jamie Gilbert tossed a complete game with five strikeouts

MARIETTA, Ga. — The UTSA softball team concluded a five-game road swing on Tuesday, as they bested Kennesaw State 5-3 in nonconference action at Bailey Park. As a result of the triumph, UTSA recorded its first road win of the year and matched the 2023 squad's victory tally with 29 games remaining to improve upon the previous mark.

The Roadrunners (8-19, 0-3 The American) topped the Owls (6-17, 0-0 ASUN) with senior Jamie Gilbert (3-7) twirling a complete game with five strikeouts for the win, and Emma Friedel (1-3) getting tagged with the loss.

Sophomore Madi Hays led the way at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a home run. Meanwhile, junior Jaylen Prichard, sophomore Madison Lenton, and classmate Caton Letbetter also drove in runs for the squad.

Hays led off the contest with a solo shot, delivering a 1-0 UTSA lead before an out was recorded. The Owls, however, responded with back-to-back jacks in the bottom of the second, issuing a 2-1 KSU advantage.

Consecutive walks in the top of the third put a pair on base for Lenton, who smacked a single up the middle that plated sophomore Kylie Forney. Letbetter then drove junior Camryn Robillard in on an RBI groundout, and Lenton charged home on a passed ball, delivering a 4-2 UTSA edge.

The 'Runners added another to their total in the top of the fourth, with Hays legging out an infield single before denting the plate on a Prichard groundout.

Kennesaw State never stopped battling, loading the bases with one out in the bottom of the seventh. The Owls worked a walk, promoting a 5-3 score line, before Gilbert induced a pair of shallow fly balls to get out of the jam and pick up the win.

UTSA will now return to the Alamo City, where they'll play their first home American Athletic Conference series against North Texas from Friday through Sunday at Roadrunner Field.
