'Runners battle weather, best Mean Green, 4-2

Despite multiple weather delays, UTSA took down North Texas on Sunday

SAN ANTONIO — The UTSA softball team picked up its first American Athletic Conference victory on Sunday, as they took down North Texas 4-2 in a series finale that was plagued by a litany of weather delays.

The Roadrunners (9-21, 1-5 The American) topped the Mean Green (15-12, 5-1) as senior Jamie Gilbert twirled a complete game with five strikeouts for the win, and McKenzie Wagoner (4-7) was tagged with the loss.

Senior Taylor Jensen delivered a standout performance, launching a long ball, while classmate Erykah Guerrero went 3-for-3 with an RBI, and junior Sophie Campbell had a 2-for-4 day.

Kailey Gamble started the scoring, hitting a two-run home run in the top of the first to give the Mean Green a 2-0 lead.

After a patch of rain and a lightning delay, the 'Runners found a spark in the bottom of the third. Campbell laced a single up the middle, and junior Jaylen Prichard made her way to first on a fielder's choice ground ball. Senior Taylor Jensen then knotted things up with one swing of the bat, rocketing a two-run moon shot over the wall in left field.

Gilbert kept the Mean Green off the board for the remainder of the contest, and UTSA broke the deadlock after loading up the bases in the bottom of the fifth.

Campbell and Prichard singled ahead of a Jensen walk that brought up Guerrero. She dropped a blooper into center field, plating freshman Sydney McReynolds, who entered as a pinch runner.

UNT got out of the jam, but UTSA added another insurance run in the bottom of the sixth. Junior Camryn Robillard worked a base hit and used a Mean Green miscue to dent the plate and issue a 4-2 advantage.

UTSA will now hit the road with a three-game conference series beginning on Friday against Wichita State inside Wilkins Stadium.
