UTSA set for busy weekend in Denton

DENTON, Texas – The UTSA women’s tennis team travels to Denton, Texas for a three-match weekend, starting North Texas on Saturday at 11 a.m. The Roadrunners close the weekend on Sunday, facing Tyler JC at 9 a.m. and Cowley CC at 1 p.m. – all at Waranch Tennis Complex.

 

The Roadrunners hold a 7-2 record so far, coming off a 4-0 loss to Rice on Feb. 24. UTSA sits at No. 70 in the ITA Rankings this week. The team holds a 17-5 doubles record and a 28-14 singles record.  

 

Ekua Youri leads the team with six wins in singles action, while Fatima Gutierrez and Vittoria Baccino each have collected five singles victories. Baccino has proven that she can battle through adversity as four of her opponents have taken her to a third set and she has won 75 percent of them. The duo of Cassie McLay and Aleksandra Zlatarova have a 6-1 record in doubles.

 

North Texas sits at 6-5 this season after a 4-0 loss to No. 49 Grand Canyon on Feb. 24. Carolina Laydner leads the team with six singles wins, half of them at the fourth court. Lilly Schultz and Lou Chalard have a 7-3 record at the No. 2 doubles court. Cowley College holds a 4-2 record this season, while Tyler Junior College has an 0-3 record.

 

The Roadrunners are still on the road next weekend, facing UT Arlington in Arlington, Texas, on March 8 at 11 a.m. and Tarleton on Stephenville, Texas, on March 9 at 12 p.m.
