'Runners to visit Cowgirls for Second Round of WNIT

UTSA will face Wyoming at 2 p.m. C.T. at Arena-Auditorium in Laramie

SAN ANTONIO — The UTSA women's basketball team will hit the road to compete in the Second Round of the 2024 Postseason WNIT on Sunday. The squad is slated for a 2 p.m. C.T. tipoff against Wyoming inside Arena-Auditorium in Laramie, Wyoming.

The game will be broadcast for free on the Mountain West Digital Network, with Justin Adams providing play-by-play alongside analyst Darryl Jacobs. Neal Raphael will deliver the radio call in the greater San Antonio area on The Bull 93.3 FM and worldwide on the iHeartRadio app

The Roadrunners (18-14, 10-8 The American) advanced past Northern Colorado on Thursday with an 80-62 victory in the First Round, representing the first national postseason win in the program's history. UTSA improved to 1-2 all-time in postseason play, with two opening-round losses coming in the 2008 and 2009 iterations of the NCAA Tournament.

As a team, UTSA shot 47.7% from the field and 42% from beyond the arc, recording 16 more points off turnovers and 11 more fast-break points than the Bears. Senior Jordyn Jenkins went 11-for-16 from the field, charting a game-high 27 points, and classmate Kyra White was one assist away from a double-double. Freshman Aysia Proctor and sophomore Sidney Love joined the pair in recording double-digit points as Proctor totaled 13 and Love 10.

The 'Runners hold opponents to a 36.0% shooting clip on the year, marking the 15th-best in the NCAA, and also rank sixth in rebounds per game (44.8), eighth in offensive rebounds per game (16.0), 15th in rebound margin (plus-8.5), 25th in defensive rebounds per game (28.7), and 27th in blocks per game (4.7).

Individually, White has posted the second-most assists in The American, dishing out 4.9 apg. She is also third in assists/turnover ratio (1.66) and minutes per game (34.8). Redshirt junior Elyssa Coleman joins her on the league leader board, with 45 blocks ranking her sixth and 7.4 rpg 10th.

The Cowgirls (16-4, 11-7 Mountain West) were an at-large qualifier for the tournament and will make their 2024 WNIT debut after receiving a first-round bye.

Wyoming was selected for the third consecutive season and will compete in the event for the 12th time in its history. They have compiled a 20-10 all-time record in the WNIT, winning the event in 2007, and are slated to make their 14th overall national postseason tournament appearance.

After being bounced by Kansas State in last year's iteration, the Cowgirls will look to reach the Super Sixteen after a regular season that saw Allyson Fertig selected for the All-Mountain West Team and Emily Mellema appear on the MW All-Defensive Team.

A double-double machine, Fertig recorded seven across the 2023-24 campaign and is the 13th-most efficient shooter in the country, converting at a 59.9% rate. Her 1.50 blocks per game ranked her second in the Mountain West, and her 8.2 rpg placed her fourth. She leads the team with an average of 13.7 ppg, and Malene Pedersen is not far behind, charting 10.7.
