UTSA drops 4-2 decision to Lamar

Sophomore Madi Hays hit her third home run of the year

SAN ANTONIO — Despite a sophomore Madi Hays home run, the UTSA softball team suffered a 4-2 setback at the hands of Lamar on Tuesday in nonconference action at Roadrunner Field.

The Roadrunners (9-25, 1-8 The American) fell to the Cardinals (22-10, 8-1 The Southland) as freshman Iliana Saucedo (3-5) was tagged with the loss, and Karyana Mitchell (4-0) earned the win. Senior Jamie Gilbert also featured in relief, fanning four over four innings without allowing any earned runs.

Hays had a 2-for-3 afternoon with an RBI, while junior Sophie Campbell recorded a double. Additionally, senior Taylor Jensen, freshman Taryn Madlock, and sophomore Caton Letbetter all logged hits for the squad.

Swinging for the fences on the first pitch she saw, Hays went yard to lead off the bottom of the first. After Saucedo used a strikeout to get out of a bases-loaded jam, the 'Runners doubled their lead in the second, as Madlock singled before scoring on a Cardinal error.

Lamar rallied back in the top of the third, first pushing across a run on an RBI double before a two-run home run by Veronica Harrison saw a 3-2 Cardinal advantage. A Roadrunner miscue followed in the fourth, prompting another Lamar run and a 4-2 edge.

The Cardinals threatened again in the sixth, using a walk, a single, and a fielder's choice ground ball to juice the bases. Gilbert then twirled a strikeout and induced a pop-up behind the plate to escape the inning unscathed.

UTSA was unable to dent the plate for the remainder of the contest and will look to bounce back with a three-game American Athletic Conference showdown against Memphis on the docket at Roadrunner Field from Thursday through Saturday.
