Roadrunners to return to course this weekend for The Bruzzy

SAN ANTONIO — The UTSA women’s golf team will return to the course for the first time in more than three weeks on Saturday-Sunday, March 30-31, at The Bruzzy, which will be hosted by North Texas at Dornick Hills Golf & Country Club (par 70/6,071 yards) in Ardmore, Oklahoma.

The Roadrunners will travel a lineup of Camryn Carreon, Daniela Abonce, Morgan Ellison, Olivia Williams and Hunter Nugent to compete against No. 8 Arkansas, Charlotte, FIU, Kent State, Minnesota, No. 44 North Texas, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, No. 28 Purdue, Texas Tech, Tulsa and Wisconsin. The field will play 36 holes on Saturday and the final round is slated for Sunday with 8:30 a.m. starts each day.

UTSA has played in The Bruzzy twice previously, finishing ninth in 2021 and 15th in 2018.

The Roadrunners are coming off a runner-up showing at the Momentum Transportation UNF Collegiate on March 4-5 in Jacksonville, Florida. UTSA fired an 11-under-par 853, the second straight and fifth time overall this season with a team total below par. It now ranks as the fourth-best 54-hole tally in program history with three of those occurring during the 2023-24 campaign.

Individually, Carreon led the way by tying for fourth place with a 7-under 209 (69-69-71), good for her 18th career top-10 finish, while Ellison ended up with a share of 12th place — a season-best finish — after recording a 2-under 214 (69-74-71).

Carreon leads UTSA with a 70.33 stroke average and four top-10 finishes, including a pair of victories last fall. The senior from San Antonio has posted 18 par-or-better scorecards — including 14 sub-70 scores — in 24 rounds during her final campaign.

Abonce ranks second on the team with a 73.0 scoring mark. The sophomore from Mexico logged her top finish of the season last September when she finished second at the Sam Golden Invitational with a 12-under 204 (68-68-68).

Ellison boasts a 73.58 average and a trio of top 15s this season. The junior from Georgia owns nine par-or-better scorecards in 24 rounds in 2023-24.

Williams totes a 73.48 stroke average and the England native posted the top finish of her sophomore season last fall when she placed 10th at the Badger Invitational.

Nugent will make her first appearance since the Dale McNamara Invitational last October, when she finished 79th.
