Hays homers as ‘Runners drop series finale

Memphis took down UTSA, 8-2, on Saturday

SAN ANTONIO — Despite a home run from sophomore Madi Hays, the UTSA softball team fell 8-2 in an American Athletic Conference series finale on Saturday at Roadrunner Field.

The Roadrunners (11-26, 3-9 The American) defeated the Tigers (4-27, 1-11 The American), with senior Jamie Gilbert (5-9) receiving the loss and Taniyah Brown (3-12) the win. Also appearing in the circle, Reagan Smith tossed 3.2 innings without allowing any earned runs, and junior Sophie Campbell joined Hays in recording an RBI in the afternoon.

Memphis used a pair of solo home runs in the third to take a 2-0 lead before adding three more to their total on a round-tripper in the fourth.

Looking to respond in the home half, freshman Brenna Jahn reached on a fielder’s choice and moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. However, the threat did not come to pass, as Brown worked out of the jam, preserving a 5-0 Tiger advantage.

Memphis then took advantage of a Roadrunner miscue in the fifth, plating three to go up 8-0 and place themselves in position for a run-rule victory.

Hays, however, kept the ‘Runner in the fight, smashing a moonshot over the wall in the left to work an 8-1 score line that continued the contest.

Smith kept Memphis off the scoreboard for the remainder of the game as UTSA looked to rally in the bottom of the seventh. Junior Jaylen Prichard slapped a single with one out and moved over to second on a Tiger error. She proceeded to swipe third on a wild pitch, and senior Memphis took down UTSA, 8-2 on Saturday was walked, putting runners on the corners. Campbell then issued an RBI groundout that allowed Prichard to dent the plate and score UTSA’s second run of the contest. Brown eventually found the final out, securing the 8-2 win for Memphis.

After winning games on Thursday and Friday, UTSA secured their first series win since taking 2-of-3 from UTEP in March of 2023 and will look to keep the momentum going as they visit Beaumont with a matchup against Lamar slotted for Tuesday at 4 p.m.
