SAN ANTONIO — Seven different members of the UTSA softball team drove in runs as the squad run-ruled Memphis 11-1 on Friday in American Athletic Conference action at Roadrunner Field. With the win, the 'Runners secured their first series win since taking 2-of-3 from UTEP early in March 2023.
The Roadrunners (11-25, 3-8 The American) defeated the Tigers (3-27, 0-11 The American), as sophomore Reagan Smith (1-1) pitched all five innings, scattering four hits and allowing just one run. Meanwhile, Ryle Dugar (1-11) was tagged with the loss.
Senior Taylor Jensen and junior Sophie Campbell both went 3-for-3 night, as Jensen plated two and Campbell one. Classmate Jaylen Prichard was 2-for-2 with a double and a walk, driving in a game-high three runs. Junior Camryn Robillard joined her in logging multiple RBIs, while freshman Brenna Jahn and sophomore Kylie Forney plated runs, with freshman Taryn Madlock launching her first collegiate home run.
UTSA got started quickly, as sophomore Madi Hays singled, Prichard doubled, and Jensen smacked a base-hit down the left field line to deliver a 2-0 edge in the bottom of the first. The stanza continued with a Campbell two-bagger and a Robillard sacrifice that saw a 3-0 advantage heading into the second.
Madlock crushed a 3-0 pitch over the wall in left-center to open the second, issuing the Roadrunners' fourth run of the evening, ahead of a Tiger big fly that resulted in a 4-1 score line. The 'Runners then used a crooked number in the third to take a 6-1 lead as Robillard singled to score Jensen, and Forney plated Campbell on a deep fly ball.
In the bottom of the fourth, Madlock smashed a single up the middle as sophomore Caton Letbetter and Hays were walked to load the bases with no outs. Prichard then sliced a single into the outfield, scoring two, and Jensen doubled, allowing Hays to dent the plate. The 'Runners marched on with a base knock courtesy of Campbell plating Prichard, and Jahn used a sac fly to score freshman Kalee Rochinski and take an 11-1 edge.
Smith then entered the circle for a three-up, three-down top of the fifth, halting the contest early and securing the victory.
The 'Runners and Tigers will meet once more, with a Saturday series finale beginning at noon.
