‘Runners fall to 49ers in series opener

Seniors Erykah Guerrero and Taylor Jensen each launched long balls in the win

SAN ANTONIO — On Friday, the UTSA softball team fell to Charlotte, 10-5, in what represented an American Athletic Conference series opener at Roadrunner Field.

The Roadrunners (12-31, 3-13 The American) suffered a setback at the hands of the 49ers (23-16, 10-6 The American), as sophomore Reagan Smith (2-2) picked up the loss for UTSA while Kadie Becker (1-1) earned the win for CLT.

Seniors Erykah Guerrero and Taylor Jensen each recorded home runs on the evening, while redshirt freshman Kylie Forney and junior Sophie Campbell joined the pair in logging hits.

Charlotte jumped on the board quickly, putting up three runs in the top of the first, but the ‘Runners responded promptly, as Jensen walked ahead of a Guerrero round-tripper in the home half that resulted in a 3-2 score line.

The 49ers busted the game open with four runs in the third, one in the fourth, and two in the fifth, building a 10-2 advantage. UTSA then staved off a run-rule defeat as multiple CLT miscues put freshman Taryn Madlock and junior Jaylen Prichard on base for Jensen. She launched a rocket over the wall in left field, plating the pair and trimming the deficit to five.

Neither team could dent the plate from then on, as the 49ers cruised to the 10-5 win. The squads will match up twice more on the weekend, with an Ovarian Cancer Awareness showdown on Saturday at 1 p.m., before an Alumni Day finale at noon on Sunday.
