SAN ANTONIO — The UTSA softball team suffered a 12-2 run-rule defeat at the hands of Charlotte in American Athletic Conference action on Saturday at Roadrunner Field. Additionally, throughout the contest, the ‘Runners and 49ers joined the SEC and several others in donning teal uniforms in support of the #AllForAlex and #GeauxTeal ovarian cancer awareness campaigns.
The Roadrunners (12-32, 3-14 The American) fell to the 49ers (24-16, 11-6 The American), with freshman Iliana Saucedo (3-7) getting tagged with the loss and Brooke Bowling (4-1) earning the win. Six different ‘Runners logged hits on the day, as freshman Taryn Madlock went 2-for-2 with a double, and junior Jaylen Prichard joined her in logging a two-bagger.
Charlotte wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, plating four in the first before Prichard was walked to start the home half. Shortly after, senior Erykah Guerrero and junior Sophie Campbell smacked singles through the infield, loading up the bases. Bowling, however, recorded a strikeout and induced a fly out to get out of the jam. CLT then added two in the second, four in the third, and one in the fourth to work an 11-0 advantage.
Looking to respond, Madlock was plunked to open the bottom of the fourth, ahead of a fielder’s choice groundout and a Prichard double that put two in scoring position. Charlotte again escaped unscathed, keeping the 11-run lead intact.
A solo home run in the fifth provided the 49ers some extra insurance, and in the bottom of the frame, UTSA pushed two across to avoid the shutout. Sophomore Madison Lenton singled through the right side before freshman Aubrie Henderson reached due to a CLT error. Madlock promptly dropped a double into center field, scoring the pair en route to the 12-2 final score.
The squads will meet again on Sunday with a noon first pitch kick-starting Alumni Day in San Antonio.
