Morrin helps Ireland U-19 National Team to Euro Finals

SAN ANTONIO – UTSA rising sophomore Sophie Morrin continued her international journey with the Republic of Ireland U-19 National Team earlier this month. She joined the roster for the 2024 Euro Qualifiers in Croatia with matches against Iceland, Austria and Croatia.

In the latest run, the U-19 Irish National Team earned three consecutive victories while putting away Iceland (4-1), Austria (1-0) and Croatia (3-0) to advance to the 2024 UEFA Women’s U-19 Championship Finals in Lithuania, July 14-27. Morrin made two starts through the three round robin games while making key plays throughout these massive fixtures for Ireland. This is the first time in the Elite round that Ireland has won all three matches to advance. The last time the squad qualified for the European Championship Finals was a decade ago in 2014.

The draw for the finals will take place April 30 to determine the two groups of four that will also include England, France, Germany, Lithuania, Netherlands, Serbia and Spain.

“We are so happy for Sophie and her Ireland teammates on their qualification into the Euro Finals,” UTSA head coach Derek Pittman said. “Her dedication and commitment to be prepared and perform for her home nation is inspirational for our program. Every time Sophie steps on the field, she empties her tank for her team and this competition was no different. It was exciting to watch her run her socks off to help her teammates achieve this tremendous feat. We wish them all the best in the Finals this summer.”

Morrin joined the youth national squad and head coach Dave Connell in October for three matches and previously played for Ireland’s U-17s in 2021-22, representing Ireland at the U-17 UEFA Euros. Hailing from Cheshire, England, Morrin played for both the Manchester United Foundation RTC U-16 Girls squad in the FA Girls' England Talent Pathway League and went on to captain the Liverpool FC Women U-21 squad to the 2023 WSLA Plate.
