SAN ANTONIO — Four members of the UTSA softball team launched long balls as the ‘Runners took down UIW, 7-6, in the Crosstown Showdown on Tuesday at H-E-B Field.
The Roadrunners (13-37, 3-18 The American) bested the Cardinals (28-13, 12-6 Southland), as senior Jamie Gilbert (6-15) picked up the win in relief, twirling 5.1 innings with five strikeouts. Larissa Jaquez (9-5) was tagged with the loss for UIW, as senior Erykah Guerrero, redshirt freshman Madi Hays, junior Jaylen Prichard, and sophomore Kylie Forney all went deep. Prichard provided the game-winner and paced the squad with a 3-for-4 evening, while junior Sophie Campbell joined her in logging multiple hits.
Guerrero launched a leadoff home run in the top of the second to hand UTSA an early advantage, but UIW promptly responded, plating three in the home half to go up 3-1.
Not to be deterred, Prichard sparked a two-out rally with a double in the top of the third, ahead of a senior Taylor Jensen walk and a Cardinal miscue that knotted things up. UIW again answered, pushing a trio across in the bottom of the inning to take a 6-3 lead.
UTSA marched on as Hays homered in the fourth to keep the ‘Runners in the fight. A junior Camryn Robillard walk followed, and Forney smashed a long ball of her own, retying the contest 6-6.
Later, in the sixth, Prichard launched a solo shot that allowed UTSA to regain a 7-6 edge. From there, Gilbert kept the Cardinals off the scoreboard, securing the Roadrunner victory.
The ‘Runners will now turn their attention toward a three-game series against Tulsa, with game one slated for 5 p.m. on Friday at the Collins Family Softball Complex.
