Smith shuts out Cardinals for midweek victory

The sophomore fanned five while allowing just three hits in a 3-0 win over Lamar

BEAUMONT, Texas — Carrying momentum from an American Athletic Conference Honor Roll selection, sophomore Reagan Smith threw a complete-game shutout as the UTSA softball team defeated Lamar 3-0 on Tuesday at the LU Softball Complex.

The Roadrunners (12-26, 3-9 The American) bested the Cardinals (23-13, 9-3 Southland), with Smith (2-1) scattering three hits and recording five strikeouts in the win, while Sabrina Joline (3-4) was pegged with the loss.

Junior Jaylen Prichard and senior Taylor Jensen led the way at the plate, each going 3-for-4, as Jensen, freshman Brenna Jahn, and classmate Taryn Madlock all drove in runs.

Station-to-Station softball allowed the ‘Runners to plate a pair in the top of the first, as sophomore Madi Hays and Prichard started off the inning with back-to-back singles. Sophomore Sophie Campbell then walked, and Jensen dropped a blooper into center to score Hays. Shortly after, Prichard dented home on a base knock by Jahn, issuing a 2-0 UTSA edge before Lamar got out of the jam, stranding two.

UTSA added another to its total in the fourth, as Robillard mashed a leadoff double into the gap before Madlock pushed her across the plate on a single.

The Cardinals threatened in the fifth, using a single and a walk to put a pair on base before Smith clamped down, inducing a lazy fly ball to strand the runners.

Looking to spark a comeback, Lamar smoked a leadoff double to open the seventh. A fly out and a passed ball followed, sending the Cardinal to third, ahead of back-to-back Smith strikeouts that secured a 3-0 victory and the complete game shutout.

UTSA now turns its attention toward East Carolina, with a three-game AAC series on the docket in Greenville, North Carolina. The ‘Runners and the Pirates will face each other thrice at the Max R. Joyner Family Stadium, beginning on Friday at 4 p.m.
