UTSA to face No. 21 Baylor at Roadrunner Field

The squads will meet in San Antonio on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

SAN ANTONIO — The UTSA softball team will welcome No. 21 Baylor into Roadrunner Field on Tuesday, with a 6 p.m. nonconference contest on the docket. While supplies last, fans will receive a free “Beat the Bears” T-shirt upon entry, and new UTSA men’s basketball coach Austin Claunch will throw out the ceremonial first pitch.

The Roadrunners (12-29, 3-12 The American) went 1-3 last week, picking up a 3-0 victory over Lamar before falling in a trio of games against East Carolina.

Sophomore Reagan Smith was solid on the week, twirling a complete-game shutout and fanning five in the matchup with the Cardinals. At the dish, junior Jaylen Prichard boasted a .417 AVG across the weekend, going 5-for-12. She dropped a double and scored two runs for the squad while maintaining a perfect fielding percentage.

As a team, UTSA boasts the 26th most walks in the NCAA, receiving 135 free passes on the year. Individually, seniors Taylor Jensen and Jamie Gilbert serve as league leaders, with Jensen catching 10 runners stealing for the 25th-best figure in the country. Gilbert has worked 10 complete games in the circle and also ranks fifth in games started (17), fifth in strikeouts (80), seventh in innings pitched (106.0), and seventh in appearances (26). Sophomore Sophie Campbell has used three sacrifice flies to climb into third on The American’s leader board, while freshman Iliana Saucedo is fifth with a 7.1 K/7 ratio.

The Bears (21-14, 5-10 Big 12) enter ranked 21st in the most recent ESPN.com/USA Softball national poll and are coming off a series victory over Texas Tech.

Baylor boasts several of the Big 12’s best, including Shaylon Govan, who maintains a .455 AVG that checks in at 14th nationally. Her OBP of .586 is the third-best in the NCAA, and 0.77 walks per game is 19th. Emily Hott tops the team with seven home runs on the year and 17 RBIs, sitting just behind Govan, who drove in 18.

In the circle, the Bears maintain a 2.88 ERA, as Rylee Crandall leads the way at 2.20 with a 10-5 record. Aliyah Binford, Kaci West, and Lexie Warncke join her in logging wins on the year, while West has posted the most saves with three.
