UTSA drops regular season finale at Florida Atlantic

BOCA RATON, Fla. – The UTSA baseball team dropped its regular season finale, 6-4, against Florida Atlantic in American Athletic Conference action on Saturday afternoon at FAU Baseball Stadium in Boca Raton, Fla.

 

QUICK HITS

·      Matt King and James Taussig each led the team with three-hit games. King hit a double and scored two runs, while Taussig recorded an RBI, one run and a stolen base.

·      Caleb Hill went 2-for-4 with a run and hit by pitch.

·      UTSA fell to a 32-22 overall record (17-10 in AAC play) while Florida Atlantic improved to a 26-27 overall record (12-15 in conference action).

 

BREAKDOWN OF THE GAME

After a scoreless first inning, the Roadrunners opened scoring with a pair of runs in the top of the second. A couple of singles by King and Taussig, plus a hit by pitch to Diego Diaz quickly loaded the bases to start the frame. Then, Mark Henning delivered a single to right field to drive in two runs and give UTSA a 2-0 lead.

 

The Roadrunners extended their lead to 4-0 in the top of the third inning. The first two batters got on base via one hit by pitch and one walk, before Taussig singled to right field to bring home one. A few batters and an out later, Hector Rodriguez reached first using a fielder’s choice and King came home from third on the play.

 

The Owls scored three to make it a one-run game in the bottom of the third. The score didn’t budge in the next inning as Fischer Kingsbery sat down Florida Atlantic’s batters in order using a lineout, strikeout and foulout. One run crossed the plate in the bottom of the fifth as the Owls knotted the score at 4-4.

 

The sixth and seventh innings went scoreless as freshman Robert Orloski faced just one more batter than the minimum across the two frames. In the sixth, Orloski sat down the Owls in order via a groundout and two flyouts.

 

Florida Atlantic took the lead with a two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth. In the ninth, Mason Lytle led off the inning as he reached base on an error by the Owls’ first baseman but the Roadrunners were not able to answer. UTSA fell to Florida Atlantic by 6-4 in the regular season finale and game three of the series on Saturday afternoon.

 

ON DECK

The American Athletic Conference Tournament is set for May 21-26 at BayCare Ballpark in Clearwater, Fla. Seeding will be announced later today.
