UTSA swept by Wichita State in Saturday doubleheader

SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA baseball team fell in both games of its Saturday doubleheader against Wichita State, falling by 11-2 in the first game and 8-4 in the second game at Roadrunner Field.

 

QUICK HITS

·      Matt King led the team, picking up three wins across the two games.

·      Braylon Owens put together a quality start in the finale, keeping the Shockers to just one run on three hits in 6.1 innings pitched. He struck out five batters in the outing.

·      UTSA fell to a 27-20 overall record (13-8 in AAC play) while Wichita State improved to a 24-26 overall record (10-11 in conference action).

 

GAME ONE: Wichita State 11, UTSA 2

The Roadrunners opened up scoring first as a double play in the bottom of the first allowed Mason Lytle to score from third. The Shockers scored one run in the top of the next inning to knot the score at 1-1.

 

Wichita State took a 4-1 advantage in the top of the third with three runs scored. UTSA cut their deficit to 4-2 in the bottom of the inning as a single to left field by King brought home Lytle.

 

The fourth and fifth innings went scoreless as Quiroga forced the Shockers down in order. Wichita State scattered four runs across the sixth and seventh frames to extend its lead to 8-2. 

 

In the eighth, Conor Myles put together a scoreless frame as he worked himself out of a bases-loaded jam. The Shockers add another three runs in the top of the ninth while the Roadrunners were not able to keep pace as UTSA fell to Wichita State by 11-2 in the first game of the day.

 

GAME TWO: Wichita State 8, UTSA 4

The second game of the day had a strong start for the Roadrunners. Owens dominated on the mound, not allowing the Shockers to score through the first six innings. In the top of the first, he struck out two batters. UTSA scored the first two runs of the game, opening it up with an RBI single by James Taussig up the middle that brought in Lytle for a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first.

 

Owens then forced a quick 1-2-3 inning in the top of the second, picking up another strikeout. The Roadrunners’ offense added another run to their lead in the bottom of the frame as a sacrifice fly by Lytle brought in Mark Henning.

 

In the third, Owens worked himself out of a jam. He allowed two singles to start the inning but struck out two and forced a flyout to put another zero on the scoreboard. The junior continued to deal on the mound, recording two more 1-2-3 frames in the fifth and sixth.

 

In the seventh, the Shockers broke open the game, scoring seven runs to take a 7-2 lead. Wichita State added another run in the top of the eighth to extend its lead to 8-2.

 

The Roadrunners struggled at the plate as only one got on base from the sixth through eighth innings. In the bottom of the ninth, a double to left field by King set Olivo up to launch a two-run home run to cut the deficit to four. UTSA was not able to come back as it fell to Wichita State by 8-4 in the series finale.  

 

ON DECK

The Roadrunners don’t have a midweek in this upcoming week due to finals. UTSA will host its final home series next weekend on May 10-12 against South Florida. Senior Day and Graduation will be celebrated prior to the game on Saturday, May 11.
