SAN ANTONIO – UTSA soccer sophomore Sophie Morrin is set to continue her international call-up journey this month, as it was announced on Monday that she has been selected to continue with Republic of Ireland’s U-19 National team on the UEFA European Championships roster.
In April, Morrin helped the U-19 Irish National Team to three consecutive victories in Group A2 - Round 2, making key plays with starts in two games and aiding Ireland to its first sweep in the Elite round and the first trip to the European Championships since 2014. On Monday, Morrin was announced among the 20-member roster under head coach Dave Connell. With the finals slated in Lithuania, July 14-27, Ireland was drawn among Group B along with Spain, Germany and Netherlands. Ireland’s first outing is set for Monday, July 15, against defending U-19 UEFA Champion, Spain.
“We are ALL massive Ireland fans right now and we can’t wait to cheer Sophie and her teammates on in this huge competition,” UTSA head coach Derek Pittman said. “Being selected for your YNT is among one of the highest achievements and is an enormous credit to Sophie’s consistency on and off the field. She is a top player for Ireland and we are extremely proud of her. Sophie is a testament to the high level of players that we have on our roster and continue to attract here at UTSA. We wish Sophie and her Ireland teammates all the best on the biggest stage in European football. #TheGirlsinGreen”
The tournament will be played in three Lithuanian cities - Jonava, Kaunas and Marijampole - with the semifinals taking place on Wednesday, July 24th ahead of the final on Saturday, July 27th.
