Five Roadrunners selected for Shrine Bowl 1000

TAMPA, Fla. — Five members of the UTSA football program have been selected for the Shrine Bowl 1000, as the East-West Shrine Bowl unveiled its watch list this week.

Tight end Oscar Cardenas, wide receiver De’Corian “JT” Clark, defensive lineman Joe Evans, inside linebacker Jamal Ligon and outside linebacker Jimmori Robinson all made the list.

Cardenas, a senior from San Antonio Brandeis High School, is a two-time all-conference performer for the Roadrunners. Last season, he caught 32 passes for 280 yards and two touchdowns en route to being named to the All-American Athletic Conference Third Team. A member of the program since 2019, he has 82 receptions for 997 yards and six TDs in 57 career games.

Clark, a senior out of Fort Worth O.D. Wyatt High School, was a second-team all-league performer two years ago after catching 51 passes for 741 yards and eight touchdowns to help UTSA capture the 2022 Conference USA Championship. He set the program’s single-game receiving yardage record that season with 217 and three TDs on nine receptions against Texas Southern. He will enter the 2024 campaign with 1,559 yards and 16 touchdowns on 112 catches as a Roadrunner.

Evans, a senior from Haynesville, Louisiana, has collected all-conference honors in each of his first two seasons with the Roadrunners. He earned third-team all-league recognition last fall after posting 18 total tackles, 11 unassisted stops, 2.5 tackles for loss, two sacks and a safety. The LSU transfer boasts 36 tackles, six TFLs and 3.5 sacks in 24 games as a Roadrunner.

Ligon, a senior who hails from Tyler, Texas, has been a starter at inside linebacker since his freshman season in 2020. A three-time all-conference selection, he owns the UTSA single-game record for total tackles with 19 and the career mark for assisted tackles with 148, and he is on pace to become the Roadrunners’ all-time leader in total tackles, as he boasts 285 entering this fall, 30 short of Rashad Wisdom’s school record.

Robinson, a senior from Alexandria, Virginia, emerged as a pass-rushing force last season, breaking Marcus Davenport’s program record for quarterback hurries with 10. A transfer from Monroe College in New York in 2021, he registered 40 total tackles, 23 unassisted stops, 11 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, two pass breakups and a forced fumble while playing in all 13 contests and drawing one start in 2024.

Every year, approximately 1000 all-star game eligible players are drafted, signed after the draft, or attend a rookie mini-camp. The aim is for this Shrine Bowl 1000 to serve as a look into the scouting process, as well as begin to preview college players who are currently all-star game eligible for the 2025 East-West Shrine Bowl and 2025 NFL Draft class.

The East-West Shrine Bowl is a best-in-class all-star event that will take place at AT&T Stadium in Arlington on Jan. 30, 2025. The players will be coached by NFL coaches in an NFL facility and will have access to NFL-level resources, facilities, player-friendly schedules and opportunities at the highest level. The Roadrunners will kick off the 2024 season on Saturday, Aug. 31, when they host Kennesaw State at 2:30 p.m. at the Alamodome.
