UTSA Soccer on a big stage Sunday at Toyota Field

by Sean Cartell

SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio is known as a city that embraces soccer and the Roadrunners will have an opportunity to exhibit their talents on Sunday at 6 p.m. when UTSA takes on UIW at Toyota Field, home of the United Soccer League’s San Antonio FC.

“I just absolutely love the city of San Antonio,” UTSA head coach Derek Pittman said. “I think one of our biggest strengths at UTSA is our city and our people. We are a soccer city, no doubt about it. Tons of people want to support our sport both on the men’s side, as well as on the women’s side. I feel like we have the most entertaining and best show in town when it comes to women’s soccer. We have an opportunity to showcase that in front of a huge crowd in the best venue in the city at Toyota Field. We’re grateful for the partnership with SAFC.”

Tickets to Sunday’s match are just $12 and are on sale through Ticketmaster by clicking here. Parking at Toyota Field will be free. Student admission is free by presenting a valid UTSA or UIW student ID at the box office.

UTSA (1-0) opened the 2024 campaign with a 2-1 win against Navy on Thursday at Park West. The attacking Roadrunners controlled possession for 70 percent of the game. Pittman believes that Thursday’s win will provide a solid foundation for future success this season.

“I’m really happy with this start and where we’re headed,” Pittman said. “I thought a lot of players really played well. There’s a lot to learn, but there’s a lot of positives to take away.”

UIW, under the direction of second-year head coach Jake Plant, is 0-0-1 on the year after tying Tarleton State in its season opener. The Roadrunners and Cardinals have only met twice during the regular-season, a 6-0 win by UTSA in 2018.

“Jake Plant is doing a fantastic job there,” Pittman said. “We played them in the spring and we were able to play a lot of different players. I really have enjoyed watching Jake turn that program around and point them in the right direction. They love to play. They want to get the ball down and build out of the back. That is great for us. We love to press and we love to disrupt teams and their effort to break us down. It should be a great contest with UIW. Both teams are up for it.”

The Roadrunners are used to playing in front of large crowds, leading the American Athletic Conference in attendance last season and ranking top-45 in the nation. Pittman hopes that soccer fans from all over the city will take in Sunday’s match.

“We hope that everybody will come out and support both UTSA and UIW and come take part in a really historic opportunity to watch these two teams play in a really cool setting.”
