SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA soccer program's August 18 home matchup with the crosstown UIW Cardinals will officially be moving to San Antonio FC’s Toyota Field in a huge night for San Antonio soccer, Roadrunners and Cardinals fans alike.
In the second regular season game of the 2024 campaign for both programs, UTSA and UIW will square off for just the second-ever meeting between these programs in the regular season, set to kick off at 6 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 18, at Toyota Field (5106 David Edwards Drive, San Antonio, TX 78233), home to United Soccer League (USL) professional soccer franchise San Antonio FC (SAFC).
"This is huge for women's Soccer in San Antonio! Our staff and players are elated to partner with SAFC and have the opportunity to play in front of our UTSA fans at Toyota Field,” Pittman said. “UIW is always a great rivalry game and now we get to showcase that contest on the biggest stage in our city. I'm very thankful for Dr. Campos, Deputy AD Brad Smith, our administration and SAFC's efforts to make this happen. We hope this is just the start of our opportunity to play a game at Toyota Field on an annual basis."
The Roadrunners are entering their seventh season under head coach Derek Pittman and are coming off their inaugural season in the American Athletic Conference, finishing with a 7-7-4 record. The Cardinals enter their second season under head coach Jake Plant, producing a 6-8-2 finish in his debut UIW campaign.
Although the Roadrunners and Cardinals have met three times as fall exhibition foes in the past five years, the lone regular-season meeting took place on Sept. 9, 2018, at UIW’s Gayle & Tom Benson Stadium, resulting in a commanding 6-0 UTSA victory.
Tickets for the general public to this battle of the birds at Toyota Field will be $12 for general admission and can be purchased online at: SAFC Tickets. UTSA and UIW students will receive free admission by presenting their student ID at the Toyota Field box office. Free parking will be available for fans at Toyota Field.
Ahead of the meeting with UIW, the Roadrunners will kick off 2024 exhibition contests on Sunday, Aug. 4, with a home meeting against Baylor at 7 p.m. The regular season opener is slated for Thursday, Aug. 15, with a program-first matchup against Navy at Park West with a 7 p.m. kickoff.
