UTSA hires San Antonio native Michael Cavazos as assistant baseball coach

SAN ANTONIO — UTSA head baseball coach Pat Hallmark on Tuesday announced that he has hired San Antonio native Michael Cavazos as an assistant coach.

Cavazos comes to the Roadrunners following a two-year stint as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at St. Mary’s. He helped the Rattlers to 45 wins, including 41 in the Lone Star Conference, over his two seasons on the staff. The San Antonio Lee High School product helped coach players to a combined six all-conference selections, and a pair to all-region accolades — including Clay Bradford by three different organizations — while Ryan McGowen was a South Central Region All-Defensive Team selection.

Prior to his time at St. Mary’s, Cavazos spent the 2022 season as an assistant coach at Lindenwood in St. Charles, Missouri. Lindenwood finished with 27 wins, including a 16-12 record in their final campaign in the Great Lakes Valley Conference before making the transition to NCAA Division I. A pair of Lions earned all-conference honors while the team received the 2021-22 American Baseball Coaches Association Team Academic Excellence Award.

Cavazos was an assistant coach from 2019 through 2021 at Southeast Missouri State (SEMO). He worked with the hitters and outfielders, served as camp director and oversaw baseball operations, helping the Redhawks win the Ohio Valley Conference Championship and advance to the program’s first NCAA Regional since 2016. During his time on the staff, the Redhawks boasted a pair of All-Americans, three all-conference honorees and a Freshman All-American.

In 2021, Cavazos helped guide SEMO to a 30-22 record and a sweep of the OVC regular season and tournament titles. The Redhawks went 17-10 during the league’s regular season slate and posted a 10-1 win over Murray State in the OVC Tournament Championship Game to advance to the NCAA Oxford Regional.

Cavazos got his start in coaching as an assistant coach at NCAA Division II Erskine College in South Carolina. While at Erskine, he worked as the defensive coordinator and coached the outfielders and hitters. Under Cavazos’ direction, the Flying Fleet saw an immediate increase in runs, doubles, triples, home runs, total bases, slugging percentage and stolen bases. He mentored four all-conference players and one all-region honoree in his only season at Erskine.

Cavazos has coached with Lights Out Baseball in San Antonio, an academy that developed more than 100 college and over a dozen professional players.

As a player, Cavazos was a four-year starter and All-American at Colorado Christian University from 2007-10. He finished as the school’s career and single-season leader in five statistical categories.

Cavazos received his bachelor’s degree in accounting with a double minor in finance and biblical studies from Colorado Christian in 2010. He played one year of professional baseball after graduation.

He is married to the former Mandi Lira from Granger, Indiana, and the couple has one son, Mickey.
