Soerensen snaps school records as 'Runners fall to Broncos

The junior from Meadville, Pa., boasted nine block assists to snag the program record

NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Junior Mia Soerensen was dominant defensively, setting a new program record with nine block assists across a 27-25, 25-14, 25-22 setback at the hands of Boise State on Saturday in what represented the team's final match at the SFA Tournament inside Shelton Gym. Additionally, Soerensen's nine blocks tied UTSA Hall of Famer and assistant coach McKenzie Adams for the most total blocks in the rally-scoring era.

The Roadrunners (6-7, 0-0 The American) fell to the Broncos (8-4, 0-0 MWC) in their last nonconference contest of 2024. UTSA will now focus on play in The American, with a Friday night fight against North Texas on the docket at 6 p.m. in the Convocation Center.

Soerensen also recorded nine kills to lead the team, while senior Alicia Coppedge totaled eight kills and eight blocks. Classmate Aliah Giroux led the squad with 12 digs, while sophomore Annika Sokol racked up 23 assists.

A slew of Bronco miscues allowed UTSA to work a 6-2 lead in the first frame before Boise State raced back, issuing a 6-6 tie. After trading rallies, the Broncos built a four-point edge of their own, seeing a 22-19 score line. A block and a kill for Coppedge kept UTSA in the fight, ahead of a sophomore Kai Bailey termination for a 24-24 deadlock. The squads again exchanged blows before Boise State found the put away point for a 27-25 win.

The Broncos used multiple rallies to take a 14-7 advantage in the second and kept the 'Runners at arms-length for the remainder of the stanza en route to a 25-14 victory.

Boise State again jumped out to an early lead, going up 17-10 before UTSA embarked on an 8-2 run for a 17-17 tie. A back-and-forth battle followed until the Broncos recorded a trio of points to secure a 25-22 win.
