Abonce leads UTSA on final day of Red Raider Invitational

LUBBOCK, Texas — Daniela Abonce posted a 1-under-par scorecard that included an eagle to lead the UTSA women’s golf team in the final round of the Red Raider Invitational, which wrapped up on Wednesday at The Rawls Course (par 72/6,877 yards).

Abonce’s 71 helped the Roadrunners register a team score of 297 on the final day of the 54-hole tournament and finish in ninth place with an 885 after logging rounds of 289 and 299 on Monday. UTSA finished eight strokes ahead of New Mexico State and 19 in front of UTEP, also ending up ahead of Nebraska (920) in the 16-team field.

Abonce recorded an eagle-three on the ninth hole and also added birdies on the par-3, sixth, par-4 15th and par-5 18th en route to her third par-or-better round of the season. The junior from Mexico ended up in a tie for 28th at 7-over 223 after opening the event with scores of 74 and 78.

Maria Bastarrica led all Roadrunners by grabbing a share of 26th place at 6-over 222. The sophomore from Spain opened with a 1-under 71 and then closed out with rounds of 74 and 77.

Morgan Ellison and Olivia Williams joined Abonce in the deadlock for 28th at 7-over par.

Ellison, a senior from Georgia, wrote down four birdies during a final-round 74 after starting the tournament with a 75-74—149 on Monday, finishing the event with six circled numbers.

After turning in a 74 in the first round, Williams, a junior out of England, posted her second straight 75 — this one featuring a birdie on the par-3 sixth to five her seven birdies for the week.

Sydney Bisgrove rounded out the lineup in a tie for 46th (227). The freshman from Canada registered the best round of her young career with a 71 for the opening 18 holes before ending with a 76 and an 80.

Texas Tech claimed the team title with an 856, followed by UNLV (861), BYU (868), Kent State (870) and SMU (877) in the top five.

Veronika Kedronova of Kent State captured the individual crown with a 7-under 209 (70-69-70).

The Roadrunners will return to action on Sept. 30-Oct. 1 when they travel to Iowa for the Diane Thomason Invitational.
