Bastarrica leads Roadrunners on opening day of Red Raider Invitational

LUBBOCK, Texas — Maria Bastarrica is in the top 25 individuals and the UTSA women’s golf team is in eighth place after the opening day of the Red Raider Invitational on Tuesday at The Rawls Course (par 72/6,877 yards).

Bastarrica has sole possession of 22nd place at 1-over-par through 36 holes, while the Roadrunners are eighth at 12-over par with the final round set for Wednesday.

UTSA posted team scores of 289 and 299 for a 36-hole total of 588, sitting only one shot behind Campbell and two back of sixth-place SMU in the 16-team field.

Bastarrica opened the 54-hole tournament with a 1-under-par 71 that featured three birdies. The sophomore from Spain recorded threes on the first and 11th holes and also birdied No. 2 to help offset a double bogey on the 10th. She turned in a 74 in the afternoon that was highlighted by another birdie on the second hole. She is only three strokes out of a four-way tie for seventh place in the 88-player field.

Sydney Bisgrove is two shots behind her teammate in a tie for 28th at 3-over 147. The freshman from Calgary, Alberta, matched Bastarrica in the first round with a 1-under 71 that was headlined by five birdies, all coming on the front side of the course where she posted a 5-under 31. She registered a 76 in round two that included a birdie on the par-5 ninth hole.

Olivia Williams is one shot back in a tie for 33rd at 4-over 148. The junior from England carded a 1-over 73 in the morning round and followed with a 75 in the afternoon, totaling six birdies on the day.

Morgan Ellison has a share of 36th at 5-over 149, as the senior from Georgia logged rounds of 75 and 74 on the strength of a pair of birdies.

Daniela Abonce rounds out the UTSA lineup in 48th after posting a 74-78—152.

Texas Tech leads the team standings with a 571 (289-282), followed by UNLV (574), New Mexico (578), BYU (578) and Kent State (579).

New Mexico’s Maria Caparros Levin has the individual lead at 5-under 139 (69-70).

The final round is slated for a 9 a.m. shotgun start on Wednesday.
