SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA volleyball team will open American Athletic Conference play on Friday, as they host North Texas in a Hispanic Heritage match on Friday at 6 p.m. in the Convocation Center. As a part of the festivities, the Roadrunners will be handing out free T-shirt vouchers at lunchtime on match day in the Sombrilla that can be redeemed between sets two and three for a free themed shirt, and the first 50 fans with an active student ID through the student entrance at the Convo's back lobby will receive free food.
The Roadrunners (6-7, 0-0 The American) went 1-2 at the SFA Tournament last time out, first sweeping McNeese (25-21, 25-18, 25-22) before falling to Stephen F. Austin (20-25, 25-16, 25-18, 25-19) and Boise State (27-25, 25-14, 25-22).
Junior Mia Soerensen was dominant, making the all-tournament team after posting 30 kills at a .289 clip, 16 blocks, 17 digs, and three service aces. On the week, she averaged 3.0 K/S, 1.70 D/S, 1.60 B/S, with 41.0 total points, and against the Broncos set a UTSA three-set match record with nine blocks and assists against Boise State.
Also performing well, freshman Martina Franco racked up 27 kills and 26 digs, while sophomore Annika Sokol dished out 87 assists and logged a double-double against the Ladyjacks.
On the season, the 'Runners have posted 115.5 total blocks for the 28th most in the NCAA, and 2.41 blocks per set are second in the AAC. 565 assists represent the 33rd highest figure in the nation, while 720 digs rank 38th and 607 kills 37th.
Defensively, Soerensen boasts 55 blocks to top The American and slot herself 40th in the country, and senior Aliah Giroux has dug 204 of the opposition's attacks, placing her 39th.
The Mean Green (3-8, 0-0 AAC) split at last week's Sunshine Invitational, suffering a loss at the hands of No. 16 Florida (25-22, 25-13, 25-18) and winning against Buffalo (25-14, 25-21, 25-9) in Gainesville.
Aaryn Johnson powers the squad with 120 kills and 92 digs, topping the team, with Truli Levy helping out defensively, boasting 36.0 blocks. Karyn Scroggins and Alexa Washington split setting duties, as Scroggins has worked 185 helpers and Washington 125. Additionally, Coco Gillett leads the way at the service line with 14 aces.
