SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The UTSA Roadrunners cross country teams competed in the team’s only out-of-region competition on Saturday, taking on the Cal State San Marcos Cougar Challenge on the campus course at the Mangrum Complex. The Roadrunners women finished sixth out of 16 teams with an average 6k time of 22:53. The men’s team was seventh out of 13 teams with an 8k average of 26:26.
Leading the Roadrunner women for the second consecutive outing, San Antonio sophomore Jadelyn Malesich set a new career-best 6k mark of 22:19.7 to finish 19th on the foggy California morning. Senior Chante Dixon trailed by only 11 seconds at 27th, registering a career mark of 22:30.0, while first-year French junior Lisa Pelletier was 41st in 22:55.7. Rounding out UTSA’s performances were Emma Wallace (64th, 23:17.1), Jadyn Gonzales (68th, 23:20.1), Abby Barraza (74th, 23:33.2), Savannah Lopez (78th, 23:40.6) and Itzel Rojo (98th, 24:12.6).
Taking his first leading finish, Pearland, Texas senior AJ Tyler registered a new career 8k mark of 25:01.2 in his first cross country season at UTSA. Tyler edged out junior OJ Ruiz, who arrived at 25:16.0 for 28th. Next for UTSA was Idol Ramon (91st, 26:50.9), Diego Ramirez (108th, 27:15.2), Corlin Salge (121st, 27:45.4), Dominick Landin (130th, 28:02.1) and Carter Williams (142nd, 28:52.8).
Next on the schedule, UTSA is back in the Lone Star State and on to Texas A&M’s Arturo Barrios Invitational on October 18, giving the Roadrunners an in-season preview of the NCAA Regional site at Watts Cross Country Course. This will be the fourth consecutive year for the Roadrunners at the meet.
