Youri leads UTSA to successful ITA Regional Weekend

FORT WORTH, Texas – Taking on the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Texas Regional Championships, sophomore Ekua Youri topped all the UTSA women’s tennis performers over the weekend at TCU’s Friedman Tennis Center.

Youri worked through the qualifying singles draw with victories over Texas’ Audrey Deatherage (6-1, 6-2), Stephen F. Austin’s Ana Chavez Sanchez (6-4, 6-2). In the main singles draw, Youri advanced to the Round of 16 after rallying to defeat Texas Tech’s Yekaterina Dmitrichenko (0-6, 7-6 [7], 6-3), then topping SMU’s Sophie Llewellyn (6-3, 6-3) before falling in the R16 to Houston’s Santa Strombacha (6-1, 6-2).

In addition, two other Roadrunners fought their way out of the qualification rounds. Valeria Sanchez defeated Baylor’s Brooke Thompson (6-4, 6-3) and Tarleton’s Adeliya Mukhutdinova (6-3, 4-6, 6-1), before topping Sam Houston’s Nayuma Subba (6-4, 6-2) to reach the Round of 32. Arina Babenko topped Abilene Christian’s Jessica Board (6-1, 6-3) and then North Texas’ Lilly Schultz (6-2, 6-3) to reach the main draw.

Up Next: After a short break in competition, UTSA will get back on the court in Huntsville, Texas, Oct. 24-27 at Sam Houston’s Bearkat Invitational.
