About the UTSA Roadrunners
Taking in their second consecutive home game at the Convocation Center this week after a well-traveled December and start to 2025, UTSA is looking to flip the dial on a three-game losing skid. The Roadrunners suffered a late-game setback against Tulsa on Tuesday, falling behind in the closing minute against the Golden Hurricane in the 82-77 loss in the conference home opener. A bright shining spotlight was on senior guard Primo Spears, who recorded a 40-point, eight-rebound, 5-assist performance – registering the first UTSA 40-point affair since 2020, tying for the ninth-best individual game scoring in UTSA history, the most individual points in the AAC this year and tying for the eighth-best in the NCAA this season. Senior forward Jonnivius Smith also broke off his third double-double with a 12-point, 12-rebound output.

Spears’ effort against Tulsa only solidifies his standing among the elite scorers in the nation, ranking No. 3 heading into Saturday’s game with a 22.4 ppg average. Among the most active players with an NCAA 25th-most 35:41 mpg, Spears is second in the conference at the free throw line, hitting 87.7 (71-of-81) at the stripe, while listing at sixth in the AAC with 1.86 steals and chipping in 3.6 assists toward the UTSA effort. Leading the AAC, grad student Damari Monsanto puts away 3.08 threes per game (36th NCAA) toward his 10.3 ppg. Ranking second in the AAC and 53rd nationally, Smith leads UTSA on the boards with an 8.5 rpg average, while also defending the circle with a league third-best 1.62 blocks per game, adding 6.9 points into the scoring effort. Rounding out the group of five Roadrunners averaging double-figures are Tai’Reon Joseph (12.2 ppg), Marcus Millender (10.2 ppg) and Raekwon Horton (10.2 ppg).

Among the fastest-playing teams in the nation at 27th in tempo, the Roadrunners rack up an NCAA seventh-best 17.4 fast break points per outing. Coming in at 11th nationally in steals (10.1 spg) and 26th in turnovers forced (15.9), UTSA leads the AAC in both takeaway categories. The Roadrunners are putting up 79.0 ppg as a team and shooting 42 percent from the floor, grabbing 35.6 rpg and averaging 12.4 assists.

About the Series
The Roadrunners and Shockers will meet for just the fourth time and in back-to-back seasons after UTSA joined the league last season. In the first meeting since 2011, UTSA dropped a tough road loss at Charles Koch Arena last Feb. 7, with an 84-64 loss. In the series, UTSA is 0-3 against Wichita State and 0-1 against WSU coach Paul Mills. However, this is the first time a game between these teams will be played in San Antonio.

About the Wichita State Shockers
In his second year at the helm, Paul Mills has the Shockers at 10-5 overall but entering the weekend at 0-2 in conference play after losses at Temple and against South Florida. Though the Shockers do play to tempo, listing at 37th nationally and 12.9 fast break points per game, Wichita State takes an AAC-last 18.4 threes per game. The Shockers log 12.7 assists per game and will force a lot of one-on-one drives. Wichita State averages 78.3 points on an AAC fifth-best 45.6 percent shooting, allowing 75.6 points from opponents.

Playing last season at Georgia, fifth-year guard Justin Hill paces the Shockers at 14.5 ppg on just 37.6 percent from the field, and adds in 3.5 rpg and a team-leading 3.2 apg. Back for his final season with the Shockers, Xavier Bell is also in for 14.3 ppg on 47-percent shooting, along with 2.9 rpg. After opening his career at Saint Peter’s, small forward Corey Washington and returning center Quincy Ballard top the Shockers on the boards, with Washington collecting 7.1 to Ballard’s 8.2. Both are definitely a scoring factor for WSU, with Washington putting down 13.1 ppg and Ballard with 10.2 ppg.

Up Next
The Roadrunners are away from the Convo to start next week, but remain in the Lone Star State, making the ride across I-10 to face Rice for the first time this season at Tudor Fieldhouse on Tuesday, Jan. 14.
